Looks rather nice. Thought it wouldn't work since the base of this antenna is smaller in diameter than the 5's stock antenna, but when tightened down it flared out nicely, and looks tons better. Radio reception hasn't changed, and at less than $20, it was a great upgrade.
P.S. check out the tint :)

Very nice!!! You said less than $20.00??? May I ask how much the stubby ran you at the dealership??? :D

I'm taking my 5 in for its first oil change this weekend, and I'd love to pick one up while I'm there :D

looks great Ben! I wasn't going to do this, but for $20 it looks really nice.

What tint percentages are you sportin?

That grey was our 1st choice-got the silver as our second because is was the only 5 with NAV-every time I see one I smile.

The antenna looks hot, a OEM Mazda part? How long is it because it looks just like mine for $10 at - http://www.carccessory.com/detail2.asp?key=Stubby_Short_Antenna_I

How well does the original antenna hold up to automatic car washes?
Is the stubby, or the original better for going through a wash facility?
My VW Eurovan (fixed antenna) got snapped off (my fault for not retracting it) last time I went through. Not a big deal but a pain the the ass.
I was wondering if there is anything to worry about (i.e. - snags, pulls, damage) with the 5 antenna. Would hate to have to remove one each car wash - because I know I would forget.

The OEM needs to be removed before a car wash, it's like 2 feet long.

That sucks - what about the Stubby - removed or not?

Why wouldn't Mazda just do an "in the window" antenna (like the rear quarter ala Pacifica and others)? I know the thing looks "cool" to a point but does it look cool enough to have to remove it everytime at the wash?

Maybe it is just me but I would defintely go brain dead and forget to remove it. And if you think the PHD's working the wash will remind you everytime - I think you may find a dangling wire hanging from your roof where your "cool" antenna once sat.

If I take my car to a car wash, I like to do it myself in one of the bays... That way I know I hit all the spots and there's no rough heavy machinery slappin the bajeezes out of my car! It would save your antenna, too.

Of course, the best way to do it is at home with a bucket and hose... but as an apartment renter, I know that's not always possible.

The stubbly looks great. I should have waited and bought that. Insted, I have the shark fin antenna. I have not had any problems running it through the carwash...

Benfolio- So can you tell us the length in inches? My stubby is just under 4" but I think another inch or two would help more with reception.

Benfolio
06-17-2006, 12:52 PM
I never measured it.... whoops. And the car's at home, I'm at work.
And now they're on backorder until, like, August or some mess. :(
With my employee discount it came to just over $11, but they retail for $17.10. Part # EG23-66-A30

I saw a CX-7 yesterday (don't care for them) and saw the antenna. It's maybe 8-10 inches long, so longer then the tiny stubby antennas (like what I have) but not too long. I may have to get one as it may improve FM reception slightly.

Can this be ordered from any Mazda place? Online?

wongpres
06-18-2006, 10:24 AM
Yes, it's a Mazda part so any Mazda dealership in the Canada or US can order it.

The problem is, like Benfolio mentions, the CX-7 stubby is on massive backorder right now because people have discovered that it fits all new-gen Mazda's with roof antenna's (e.g. Mazda3/5/6, and I believe MX-5 fits too). Just one dealership here in Toronto has sold or on waiting list 30+ CX-7 stubby antennas.

Also, the CX-7 is obviously new, so parts for it more scarce.

And yes, around $20 or so, so cheap mod (another reason so high demand)

Is it still flexible? Likely less flexible than the longer version we have but does it have some give in the event it gets hit?

Zoom5Zoom
06-18-2006, 03:54 PM
I checked both antenna and I think the Mazda 5 orignal antenna is more flexible.... lets not forget the CX7 antenna attachment is not the highest point on the car as it is on the Mazda 5..... JMO

Exactly, the CX-7 stubby is not as flexible as the OEM Mazda5 one, but the CX-7 one does flex so the antenna will give in of it gets hit (as opposed to taking off the entire base). One can flex the CX-7 stubby with a finger.

Zoom5Zoom
06-18-2006, 11:37 PM
Sounds stupid but I think of flexability if someone was backing up and hit the antenna.... I think the CX7 antenna on the 5 would cause more damage that is all. IF you hit the antenna driving the CX7 backwards you will also hit the roof...

mazdaFIVEmike

I was thinking more about the roof top cargo box I have. I know it will definitely hit the OEM Mazda5 antenna but may just miss or just touch the CX7 antenna... I dunno, just trying to figure it out before ordering one.

Kid Red
06-19-2006, 10:03 AM
Well it's maybe 8" long from the top of the base, so you can measure and see how close it would be.

The OEM is paper thin and 2 feet long so of course it's flexible. The CX-7 stubby it thicker and less than half the length so it won't be as flexible. Other than a cargo box I'm not sure what you'd have to worry about hitting less than a foot above the roof of your car.

I measured mine since i have the car at work today. Dang tapping noise in the dash... :( anyways:

From tip to the base it's 6 7/8th" long.
Installed from roof to tip measuring on it's angle it's 8"
Straight up from the roof to the tip it's 6"

Thanks for the detailed measurements - very helpful.

I hope they find that tapping noise of yours - I too get really annoyed with such stupid unnecessary noises!

Ordered one today - parts guy thought about 4-5weeks. Cost $15.24 including taxes.

I checked the CX-7 on the lot and it is quite flexible - I just hope the reception is as good. Maybe this one has more 'guts' in the base than in the rod.

You ordered from your local Mazda parts dealer? $15? Not bad, I might swing by there I also need some touch up paint for some darn pebble chips.

for everyone still looking for a short antenna, i want to point your attention to this site:

http://www.carccessory.com/product.asp?key=Stubby_Short_Antenna_

The plain black one (http://www.carccessory.com/detail2.asp?key=Stubby_Short_Antenna_O), 2.55 inches is on this site for 5.99 plus 5 shipping. The reception is 3 out of 5, and at that price I'll take it. I dont listen to the radio all that much, and at 10.99 shipped I think it is a great deal. I used paypal beacuse I am not familiar with the site, but if you still want a stubby antenna you should check out that site, they have other type of stubbys as well!!!

You can try

http://www.mazda-parts-dealer.com/

or

http://www.finishlineperformance.com/

I ended up getting mine from Mazda Parts Dealers, because it turns out they're the parts department for Rosenthal Mazda in Vienna, VA where I take my car for service. So I didn't have to pay for shipping.

But I believe the price for both sites was about the same.

I also think I ended up emailing both sites, because I couldn't find the part listed on their website. It was around $12 for the antenna.

if you're going to one of those automatic car washes, only take your baby through the brushless ones. I only use brushless automatic washes then use those mist-on car wash in a bottle to detail it afterwards. If you dont take care of your paint no one will :P

I'm taking my 5 in for the 'noisy front end' syndrom and 'Key Fob' TSB next week at Mississauga Mazda. In talking with the parts people, they have the stubby's in stock and offer forum members 20% off on all purchases. I'm going to pick one up for my 5.

Talk to Kenny Foo in the parts department.

Is this the mazda dealership off erin mills pwy (battleford rd)?

I've got Mazda Sport... does he offer 20% off things like fog lights and spoilers too or just parts that don't require labor?

I might give them a call...

Guys, save your money and use a dremel to cut it down. I haven't experienced any problems with reception.

02-26-2007, 01:21 AM
Joeboy- Thanks - I was thinking the exact same thing. Did you cut the whole 'whip' section off down to the solid plastic/thicker section and did you need to seal off the cut to keep water out (like with super glue or some sealant? You mention no reception loss - would you say you give distance radios stations a fair test or is all your use short distance like in cities?

joeboy
02-26-2007, 11:42 PM
I cut it off just before it tapers to the "whip" section. I haven't experienced a loss in reception at all and I'm on the road a fair bit.

I didn't seal it but that doesn't sound like a bad idea. Thanks!

(sorry for the poor pic. It's the best I had)

What ever happened to antennas with power motors that retract when you turn off the radio? My '92 Accord had one. Or at least the A-pillar manual retracting antennas, like I had on my CR-V.
