I am so sick of replacing SilverStar headlights! I have adapted the "rev past 3000, and let come to idle before turning on headlights" method, and i still blew one. I think that this will be the 5th or 6th Silverstar I have replaced since owning this car (about a year). Anyone have a better solution? I have thought about HIDs, but I HATE blue lights. Does anyone know of a color temp that would be equivalant to silverstars? Thanks for the help!

HIDS are not blue. Depending on which bulb temperature you get will equal the amount of brightness you want.

4200K is a yellow-white probably very close to Silverstar color w/o being too white.
I dont understand whats up with peoples Silverstars...I had them in my P5 for high beams, put a pair in my moms Pathfinder for 2 years now, not 1 issue and my father put them in his Frontier and those have been there for 8 months now w/o any issue....

I have been running them in my Vue for about a year with no probs and had a set in my Jetta for almost two years with no probs....I would be pissed too if I had to keep replacing them.
Jeez, i'd return them to wherever you got them, or be a total ass and buy new ones, install them and return the old ones in the new packaging and say they didn't work...

haha- already done that once... ;) Actually, the issue for me at least, seems to be with the lows. I have not blown a SS high beam bulb yet... YET

i think the problem isn't the lights...i think our low beams are getting too hot from the silver stars. if you notice, that reflective hood projects the light back to a mirror then out the front. the problem is too much heat thus causing blowouts. i went through 2 pairs before going back to OEMs. i loved the bright color, but the hassle of replacing them was getting out of hand.

i had a pair (now only one) of APC 4000K lights in my lows. i love em, and they were only 20 bucks. of course youll hear that APC blows big time, but my passenger one blew out like last month, got about 6 months of use outta that one (my passenger one ALWAYS blows around a month and a half or so before my driver side) the driver side is goin strong right now, sittin on 7 months. so if youre lookin for somethin better, check out the APC Xenon Super White 4000K Simulated H.I.D. bulbs. (they have a blue tint on them, but do not light up blue at all)

^That looks lke my solution *when* my silverstars burn out [looks at watch] in the near future... ;)
stick with OEM, they work fine
in fact, consumer reports or one of those mags rated the P5 has having the best stock headlights (meaning they cast the farthest)
I finally had to change my original low beams a few months back, that is about 5 years (manufactured Oct 2001)

i had three sets of those in 8 months. The best luck ive had is with the nokya bulbs these have lasted me about 4 months now and no signs of trouble. I bought mine from advance auto parts.

the APC hyper white bulbs that i used in my p5 looked better than the silverstars and didn't blow in 3 months. you're right, they weren't too blue. just a nice white. coupled with piaa ion yellow fog light bulbs, that made the headlights look whiter, too.

I went thru a handful of Silverstars myself before I switched over to Luminics. I love the Luminics bulbs. I had the Titanium whites first but one developed a very large bubble. It didn't end up bursting which surprised the hell out of me. ********** didn't have any more in stock so I switched to the Ultra Whites. They look great, but, I noticed a bit of a problem about 2 weeks ago. I would get in the car for work in the morning and turn on the lights and the passenger side wouldn't light. So, I pop the hood try to press the plug into the light socket and it comes on. It doesn't look as bright as the driver side one though. Next day, does the same thing. As soon as I wiggle it it lights up. So, I start to mess with it a bit. I push down on the plug and all of the sudden the brightness comes back full power. Come to find out, when I take it all apart the white plug is melted and charred some. The black socket piece that actually plugs into the bulb itself is melted............. I ended up trying to clean it up a bit and put it all back together and it works fine. It does have me a bit nervous now though.......... I am now wondering if I need to get a new plug wired in and a new socket piece.......

^badbadbadbadbadbad....
I would pull them out and go back to stock - they are pulling more current than the wire can handle. Best case? Blows a fuse on dark/scary night (why else would you have the lights on, eh?). Worst case - wire bundle catches fire and destroys the car... badbadbadbadbadbad.

That was my thought as well. I need to find that black socket piece and a new/used plug to wire in I think too. I am not all that excited about leaving the already burned/charred/melted stuff under the hood.

werd, i went through about 4 pairs of silverstars. The stock P5 lights are already bright. Save some money, and go stock.

Cut one at a junkyard and solder/tape it in.

Had silverstars for over 2 years now, blew one out just shy of the 1 year mark took it back and they swapped me for a new one on the spot under warranty, no questions asked. Since then no issues.
