I have found an interesting website that talks about the phatbox. attempts to talk with tech support about changing an VW/Audi type to a Mazda have been futile.

Apparantly the phatbox runs an embedded version of Linux. maybe you already knew that, i didnt. I also found this site: http://phatbox.sixpak.org/

That has firmware downloads for many vehicles! http://phatbox.sixpak.org/firmware/

I dont see Mazda listed but the ford radios are listed. and i believe some models are the same FMS type radios so i wonder if that would work?

I dont know much about Linux. does anyone here??? If you do, contact me. i would be willing to send someone very familier with linux a phatbox to experiment with. if you get it to work, lets publish the info and load up!

Right, but you can buy the audi units brand new for $169.00!! some places as low as $112.00!!! So if i can find a Linux programmer to do a little tweaking for us. we might be able to create a mod that will allow us to use the audi/vw units in our Mazdas. The hardware is the same, its just a matter of the firmware.

damn that cheap... crazy... there was a guy on here a while back who was trying to sell audi/vw phatboxes to mazda3 owners, it was his first post so it was a bit sketchy... maybe a year ago or so... he supposedly knew how to convert them???

that last link and a bit of searching brought up this...

looks like its pretty easy and relatively cheap with those few things, and you only need the patch if you have a 2006+...

I bought a Audi Phatbox, the mod looks easy enough... I think, people over at Phathack don't seem to want to give up there secrets on doing the mod....let's get into trouble baby and find out what happens!
