Ever since I got my CX-7, I've got a funny smell - like paint burning off hot metal.
I've only done 150 miles, but I woulda thought all that would be over with.
Any other new owners experiencing questionable smells?

It is probably the chemical that they put on the motor to make it look clean and it burns off. Had the same thing with my P5.

Thanks - wasn't sure which department to go to - fire, or service! lol

I noticed a similar odor after my test drive the other day. I attributed it to "new car stuff" burning off.

Smell lasts for about first tank of gas 340 miles. I believe it is the Cosmiline
(a waxy substance put on engine to prevent rust in transit) Our smell is all gone now.

All of the new Mazdas do it...I have the problem at work, people will ask if the car they are test driving/looking at is supposed to smell like that. I believe it's the exhaust system heating up for the first few times and the stickers/tags on it burning off.

Received my electric blue CX-7 (GT, AWD, LP, NAV) 48 hours ago. I didn't notice it really driving home from the dealer. But, now 24 hour later the stink is intense (putrid burning smell). The kids are complaining. I assume this is not a problem and there is no point calling the service department.

I had the burning smell, but it never seemed intense to me.
How many miles have you driven? Have you typically been doing short trips?
My first drive was 100 miles, and after that is was probably 25 miles each way to work and back, so maybe that let the stuff burn off more quickly.

We haven't had any long trips yet, nevermind highway driving. I hope the smell clears before our big road trip... I'm not sure I could handle hours of that smell.

Hopefully it'll clear up before then. I've never had a car have a burn smell like this before, but then again, I've never had a car shipped over from Japan before either. :)

I will post some as soon as I get a chance to take few digital pix. I must say I was a little afraid to pick it up from the dealer. I specified blue, just based on speculation and the brochure. Someone's comments on the edmunds forum had me worried last week.
I must say when I first went to pick it up, it was a bit of a shocker. It is 'electric'. Yet, after the initial shock, I must say I do like it. It will turn heads, the same as the Mystic Blue BMW X3 and X5 seem to. Certainly, not for everyone. But, I thought the last thing the world needs is more silver SUV and CUVs. Ice Blue is not available in Canada.

Great pics, and an elegantly striking color!
btw - the smell in my car went away after about 800 miles of mixed driving.
