Volkswagen brings love of vending machines to car storage

There's something inexplicably fun about getting something out of a vending machine, particularly one with a cool dispensing mechanism. And if you're picking up your new car from Volkswagen's storage facility in Wolfsburg, Germany, "inexplicably fun" just isn't the word. The storage facility, which takes up just 20 percent of the space needed by comparable facilities, holds 20-story towers filled to the brim with new VWs. An automated arm raises up into the heavens of the building, retrieving the new owner's VW and bringing it to him/her in less time, and without the potential damage brought by human error.

yeah, i've seen this before. it's pretty cool. there are a lot of cities in US which have/are building automatic parking facilities where your car is put and retrieved by a robotic platform

Old info, but cool to see again. I'd also like to visit the Transparent Factory in Dresden. Simply amazing architecture.

I wonder what insurance would be for a business like that.

I was showing that to my boss and he said that we had one like that here in TX in Abilene back in the 60s. But it was only 8 stories high. Same concept though.

Doesn't Smart do something similar at theirs in Europe?

I did see something similar for Smart in France but not on that scale!

exactly what i was thinking. before I read the article, I just thought it was an advertising gimmick for commercials or something, not something that actually existed. it's pretty cool, but just seems like an incredibly complex replacement for something as simple as a flat peice of ground with a gate around it.
