DETROIT — General Motors says it will introduce 19 new or significantly revised engines and transmissions for model-year 2007, as well as new launches of its six-speed automatic transmissions.

The domestic automaker said its plan to offer 1 million vehicles a year with six-speeds by 2008 accelerates with models of the 2007 Cadillac STS and SRX, as well as the Saturn Aura and Outlook, and Pontiac G6 featuring the updated transmission. The new six-speed variants will launch in 40 global GM models by 2007, it said.

GM said it will offer a 260-hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline direct-injection Ecotec four-cylinder with the highest specific output (130 hp per liter) of any production engine in the company's history.

That engine launches in the Solstice GXP, Saturn Sky Red Line and Opel GT. GM said the 2007 Impala will be equipped with the first GM V6 with the company's "active fuel management" cylinder deactivation technology.

The powertrain lineup also includes the company's Gen IV small-block V8 engines using combinations of cylinder deactivation, variable valve timing and E85 capability for light trucks.
