View Full Version : Thinking about getting an MSP

I was out today looking at SUVs for my girlfriend, when a nice looking MSP pulls into the lot freshly cleaned. The dealer just received it. It's a 2003 with 20000 miles. I wasn't even looking for a new car, but I made the mistake of test driving it. I really liked the way it felt, but I couldn't really lay into because the dealer was with me.
Anyway, now I keep thinking about it. I have always liked the way they looked, and the interior was amazing. Now, onto my dilemma.
I currently drive a 95 Talon TSi, slightly modified, but it might be on it's last legs. The MSP didn't seem to pull as hard as the TSI, even on partial throttle. I like how quick my Talon is, but it's just not running the same anymore. Would the MSP be relatively close to the Talon as far as quickness? I am not a great driver, and my Talon ran 10.2s in the 1/8 mile at the track. If the MSP isn't that quick stock, what would it take to get to that point?
Now for the important questions. What is the aftermarket support like on these cars? Is it pretty easy to do a lot of the work yourself? That's one thing I like about the Talon, it was pretty easy to put some of the bolt-ons on. Will I be able to do that with the MSP? Well, I think I have posted a long enough post, hopefully you will be able to help me. I really like the car, but would hate to spend $16,900 for the car to have be slower than an 11 year old car with not much room for improvement. Oh yeah, is 16,900 a good price for the low miles? That was their current asking price. Thanks a lot!

I ran 15.1 through the 1/4 mile (not the 1/8) with nothing but the Injen CAI. It's not hard to find parts for the car the only thing is just knowing where to look. There's a place on this forum that shows all the authorized vendors that offer parts for the MSP and also support the forums. You can find everything you could be looking for using the combination of resources available through this forum. Also, on the price of the one at your dealer...... I paid $16,800 for my 2003.5 with 8,699 miles on it right at 2 years ago.

price seems high
and nobody has run a 10.2 1/4 yet, lots of work needed to get there...
13's is a threshold not many people have exceeded without dropping a few g's

Yeah a 10:2 in the 8th should be no-problem, she will actually get much quicker then that.
I got a Protege LX with bolt on's & I ran a 10:16 in the 8th last year (Just a CAI & exhaust)

What is the aftermarket support like on these cars?compared to the talon, it's pretty limited. there are only a few vendors that makes parts for it but everything is available if you know where to get it. it's a bit more expensive too because of the lack of demand, but not too bad
Is it pretty easy to do a lot of the work yourself? That's one thing I like about the Talon, it was pretty easy to put some of the bolt-ons on. yes, bolt ons are just like the talon in terms of difficulty. its ecu and engine are not as forgiving though as the talon's
I really like the car, but would hate to spend $16,900 for the car to have be slower than an 11 year old car with not much room for improvement. if you get the MSP it will be slower and not have much room for improvement
Oh yeah, is 16,900 a good price for the low miles?no, that's a terrible price. i got mine new in august 03 for $18,000 with 6 miles on it. it should be in the $14-15k range from a dealer, $13-14k private party
as far as straight line speed and power, the talon is in another league. very forgiving ecu, bulletproof block (relatively), and responds really well to mods, and is one of the most popular tuner cars of all time. in terms of handling, reliability and functionality (MSP has tons more room than a talon), the talon comes second. if you're looking for straight line speed, look elsewhere. if you want a good all around car, the MSP is right up there

I got bored with the car, accomplished everything i wanted too, and i just put a deposit down on an NSX. So i need this puppy gone before the new car can get here.
You wont find a cleaner MSP on these forums, and finding one with these mods, for that price? Good luck! Do some searching and you'll see the stock MSP's are kinda prone to blowing up, so the car has been built up with nothing but the best stuff.
17,800 Buys the car with block and microtech installed and tuned, wrx 440's, everything polished and powdercoated, redline tranny fluid, spec stage 3 hybrid clutch, etc. (6k on the new engine). 19,900 takes it with ALL of the mods on it. Suspension, full exhaust, perrin FMIC, intake, new rebuilt turbo, greddy ebc, and turbo timer, 500.00 viper alarm, yada yada yada.
To replicate it would cost well over 28k in that trim.
And it EATS sti's, evo's, C5's, talons, everything at 12psi... ONLY 12 psi. Block is good for 40psi. All you need is a bigger turbo and youre good to go for 400whp.
