Ford Mondeo: We've now driven the new Galaxy and S-MAX, and if they're anything to go by, this new Mondeo is going to be a great drive. All three of these models are built on the same new platform, a lengthened version of the Focus/S40/V50/Mazda 3 platform which will also be shared with upcoming Volvos and the Land Rover Freelander. This means that the Mondeo is going to be larger and roomier than the current model.

Equipment: The Mondeo's cabin - glimpsed here in these photos - will be thoroughly refreshed, taking a design similar to that of the smart S-MAX. New equipment on offer will include knee-protecting airbags and other advanced safety devices. Options could include adaptive cruise control as well as the adaptive suspension system already offered in the S-MAX.

Design: Styling is similar to that of the sporty S-MAX, although it will keep a resemblance to the current, highly popular Mondeo. Even though the underpinnings are all-new, this car's exterior is only receiving a general update, in line with that of the Focus.

Power: Engines on offer will be similar to those in the S-MAX and Galaxy, and will include the 225bhp 2.5T turbo engine as well as 1.8, 2.0 and 2.2-litre petrol and TDCi diesel units. The Ford-PSA 2.7 V6 diesel is unlikely to feature, however, at least at first, as Ford insiders have said that this is reserved for Jaguar-brand 'premium' models. The Volvo 3.2-litre straight-six is also unlikely to appear in the Mondeo range, as the market for such thirsty cars in this mainstream sector is very small. Ford is expected to preview the Mondeo at the Paris Motor Show this autumn, with sales starting in spring 2007.
