hi guys, i currently drive 03 silver p5, when i got the car, i got it as AT, is it possible to swap the auto to MT (prefer the stock p5 MT), and also will the slot in the panel where the shift stick is, will the size of it be fine for the MT? are they the same size? thnx

yeah it all fits together. don't need to cut holes in the firewall or anything. I did this swap. you don't want to do it hahahahah. trade the car in for a manual before you start modding like crazy

mpf1v3
05-02-2006, 01:46 PM
lmao.. how come i shouldnt do the swap.. i mean its probably gonna turn out cheaper then exchanging the car. or are there any benifits to buying one that already came w/ manual?

thnx (i'll be later on tonight to check ur post, lol)

btw.. anybody else has any suggestions? opinions? ideas?

its not worth it. seriously trade the car in for a manual before you start modding. if you're not gonna put a turbo in your car then don't even bother. it just too much work and you will prolly save more time and money just trading the car in. I'm not trying to shit in your cheerios. unless you have about $1.5-$2 grand, alot of time on your hands, a full garage, and the dire need to tear your shit up

however if you need a parts list or something i'll help you out if you really wanna do it

I agree with Gimpo. Definately not worth the time and trouble. Sell your car and buy a manual.

yeah.. i guess i agree.. well.. my contract w/ mazda ends only next year in june.. so i'll be able to switch cars only then..i just thought y wait a year wehn i can just cahnge to MT, but since its all that trouble, which i absolutly agree, i'll stick w/ AT for another year, and then change cars, i'll have to take all my mods off, put on stock, change cars, and then put all those mods on the new car

i was looking into it, the trade in value on my AT P5 is about equivalent to the purchase price of a manual with the same miles.

but often manual used cars are more desirable. enthusiasts like them more and they're cheaper to fix and maintain.

hmm...-pixy- i really like ur black p5 w/ the chrome rims, lol, i was actually considering it for my next car instead of my silver p5 w/ normal silver rims

for a P5 the soccer mom AT demand is higher than the enthusiast MT demand *hides*

sure.. we can trade rims.. only problem is my dad hit the curb one time w/ my car while going over ice, and the outermost edge of the rim (where the tire is met) is scratched up, so i'm sure u dont want to trade for that, but if u still want, and interested to c wut the scrated up are look like, i could take pictures and show it to u, and then we'll go from there, unless of course u know how to fix it, lol

the tippie (tiptronic) was pretty fun though at the begining because u didnt have to let go of the gas pedal when shifting.. but i guess i grew out of it, i need the clutch, lol

this list includes the big parts. not misc nuts, bolts, and small stuff

mtx regular protege, or msp axles
Transmission try to get one out of an 03.5 for upgraded forks or syncros i think. its upgraded something
clutch
flywheel .
manual ecu (i was told by igdrasil that if you leave the auto ecu in the car will still work but you will get a blinking tranny light and your speedo won't work) the car should still work without it
Manual dash wiring harness (optional) you can use the existing dash harness. If you do not swap the dash harness you WILL be doing some custom wiring. My speedo and reverse lights still don't work. The starter/ignition wire is in a different spot on the different harnesses. The car will not start without rewiring this. There are 2 clips on the MTX engine harness that do not match up to Auto dash harness(one goes to the gauge cluster, i am told the other is the ODBII port.)
manual engine wiring harness (you can hack into your existing harness and splice in the pins for the tranny sensors i.e. speedo gear) also try to get a regular manual protege, not an mp3 it is missing vtcs and cruise control, msp will not have cruise) car should still work without it if you hack your auto harness
shifter lever
shifter lever bushings and control arm bushings
linkage
2 white plastic pieces that go under and over the shift lever ball thing
snap ring to hold the shifter in place
shifter bushings just get kartboy
clutch pedal assembly
fluid line from master cyl and slave cyl
steel line from slave cyl to clutch line
clutch line just get some SS braided
manual engine mount side mounts both sides the engine is actually moved over to the drivers side a little in manuals
Driver's side mount bracket attaches to the top of the tranny
rear motor mount bracket on manual tranny
front motor mount bracket
brake pedal its not as wide (optional)
gas pedal (optional) merely for looks
mtx starter
pilot bearing, throw out bearing (comes with Exedy clutch kit)
there are also misc brackets that hold the clutch line in place.

you might also need main bearing support plate from a manual. it has a spot for 1 transmission bolt on it. can possibly go without it

you still will need misc gaskets and bolts that go inbetween all the things and shit.

thats all you need to make it work. for looks you need the center console piece, shifter boot, plastic base off stock boot, and knob.

also make sure the tranny you get has the clutch release fork, and the piston (should be bolted to the front of the tranny) that pushes the release fork when you push in the clutch pedal

i was VERY fortunate and basically had a wrecked MP3 fall into my lap. all the parts i needed for like $350-$400 i still had to buy misc things new from the dealer though

redpr5
05-02-2006, 11:26 PM
sweet, you mentioned that the mp3 doesnt have vtcs...i thought the 02 p5 didnt have that. or am i getting confused with the vics

gimpo2
05-02-2006, 11:29 PM
i do believe all 3rd gen Protege's and P5's have VICS and VTCS, MP3's only have the VICS

VICS being the quasi fake dual runner shit for low end torque

VTCS being totally useless except for emissions and blocking your intake manifold

mpf1v3

dont forget the dash harness too...

PS-I contemplated this too a long time ago, when my P5...and basically after looking at the whole scenario, I sold it.

redpr5
05-03-2006, 12:20 AM
^im not sure, i just know that in the 03s theres a little ass screw thats in the VICS and it falls into the engine and fucks a lotta shit up. its some kinda butterfly valve thingy, supposed to boost low end power, but really doesnt do shit

youre lucky you got the black headlights from the factory...damn canadians lol

im gonna be doin the mt swap because i dont wanna deal with swappin the tag and title and all thatwho in their right mind would think it would be easier to do a tranny swap than to transfer titles :wtf:

...certainly not cheaper - automatics are actually worth more, so if you played it right, you could make money on the deal

Get sponsored?

redpr5

^yep (quick i.e. www.carsponsorships.com) basically a company pays you to put their name on your car. carmax does 30K sponsorships, so they give you 30K you fix up your car and then you put a vinyl on your car that has their logo

Sound's very fishy. You have to pay $89 to get your car sponsored.

Pirana
05-03-2006, 10:59 AM
Its really not a sponsorship, more like a discount program....like Sam's Club. They will negotiate a discount on your parts...Like if they get you $10,000 in "sponsorship" and lets say you need a HKS bov at $330 retail and you get it from the source at $220, you just got a $110 sponsorship deducted from your $10k. Sweet ah!

redpr5

i would imagine so, just check with your local carmax and talk to the surpervising manager there, im sure he could help you out. ill also be looking into other companies such as sony, best buy, and others.
the company that is hookin me up with my stereo (elite car stereo) will be putting their logo on my rear windshield, and ill probably talk to him about a sponsorship deal too

im getting the manual tranny and im going to rebuild it myself becaus eim gonna put a lsd in it at first i was thinking to do the whole mazdaspeed swap in my p5 but i figured instead of spending like 4000 just for the entire swap id buy a manual tranny and the hi boost turbo kit and do it that way i was just wondering if neone had ne suggestions or advice on this

I'd say the best thing you'll get out of this (assuming you do it yourself) is mechanical experience. Financially it's not worth it.
