View Full Version : is your boost gauge reading 15 psi even tho your stock?

mine was, i thought it was the gauge itself that was broken..after close inspection, the wastegate actuator's diaphragm was shot....
you have to be very careful, coz even a leak on the wastegate actuator line can lead to malfuction on the wga and cause boost spikes up to 15 psi or more which is very bad
i was lucky enough not to have blown my engine even tho i was running 14.4's at the 1/4 mile with only an intake...
this is a direct replacement of said wastegate that you can get from ATP TURBO
ATP Turbo's Wastegate Actuator rated @ 6 PSI

i know this has been said before....but it is just a warning to anyone that all of a sudden is running harder than ever....
be advise that high boost on our crappy engines is really bad...unless you got the supporting mods for it...i see an average of 8-10 psi to be "SAFE"
i hope i didn't do any real damage to my engine from getting boost-happy and wanting to race anything that moved...it was foolish, but so far..so good..
Have fun...

I'm FINALLY GLAD that someone listened to me. I told ya that it wasn't normal. But I'm glad you found the problem. (drinks)
And think of it this way bro, if you had stayed at the track a little longer, it could've been really bad after a few more runs. Be happy that you got an awesome 1/4 mile time, but be even happier that your car held together and it appears to be fine. If there was any damage, you would've probably started to notice something by now. But that doesnt mean that you wont get some sort of problem later on down the road. Just keep an eye on things, dont let it spike up to 15 psi - let off the gas slightly under boost, dont gun it, listen to the engine, watch for any smoke or unusual smells and call if you need anything. ;) We'll all make it back to the track soon enough.

i believe the same thing is happening to me right now except i'm not boosting over 9 or 10psi. I have my dsm afc hooked up to my ecu , so in the future when i get my car dyno tuned i will be able to find out exactly how much boost i'm running.

actually, i removed the WGA....as soon as a hit 1 psi of boost, the wastegate opens....so i'm not boosting anything....can't wait till my wga gets here
i also bought a vac/boost gauge....the autometer carbonfiber one...
next gauge will be A/F....and that's it...

You can buy a bunch of different style pods. I'm not a fan of the lippar pods since everyone and there mom has them. I know it is easy to find and what not, but i like the custom stuff that not everone else has. BTW

only interested in wideband...later down the road tho

Wideband is the way to go. I have to get a new A/F one soon. Money, money, money...
But you picked the ones I wanted originally. The CF series match the yellow MSP's really well. They just dont have any widebands in that series unfortunetly. :(

bumping an old thread....is there any 'repair' that can be done to the stock WGA. I just found out last night mine's doing the same thing. 15psi from 2800 to redline is fun, but I'd rather not push the engine til I'm ready for a rebuild.

do a search...I believe there is a thread out there that explains how

why would you want to repair a thing that is BAD from factory???
when they made that wastegate it was a bad design to begin with...
just replace it to have peace of mind, don't go cheap either
www.atpturbo.com sells one that would make you boost 8 psi, it is the Wastegate for a sr20t silvia turbo engine....
good luck...it is pretty easy to swap

check your vacuum lines first. i started spiking 16 psi in the middle of an autox so i turned my controller way down then off and it would still spike 16. turned out to be a dry rotted stock vacuum line. replaced the lines and car runs better than ever now.
