Very easy diagnostic and replacement of TSS (aka Pulse Generator) on our Proteges. Part located directly on top of ATX housing a few inches left of engine mount and under airbox. You can't miss it! Its electrical harness has two terminals.
1) Unclip and separate wiring harness on the part. Check resistance between the two terminals on the sensor: should be 250-600 Ohms on your multitester. If not, replace Pulse Generator (turbine speed sensor); it costs about $41 discounted from a Mazda OEM online parts store.
2) If resistance checks out okay, inspect for secure and tight connections at the harness and any damaged/frayed/broken wiring to the PCM. This is the tedious part that will not be enjoyable. Pray for #1.
thanks for the quick reply martinmzfan...
I should also inform that the problem is that the gear is stuck on 3rd and it wouldnt engage to O/D or downshift to 2nd and 1st...
but after stopping for few hours it can start from 1st to 3rd then stuck again... i have to start with 3rd on every stop light...
is there any other problems besides the turbine speed sensor?
thanks again...

Erratic or lost signals (due to a dead/open sensor) from the pulse generator (turbine speed sensor) may cause erratic shifts. It's entirely likely. Check the simple parts first. Check your fluid level and condition too.
Also, get all the stored PCM and TCM DTCs read from a good independant ATX shop with a Snap-On Redbox scanner. Autozone's won't pick-up all TCMs as I found out. But first check out that TSS electrical!!
ok, I think I've located the sensor on the tranny...
but I cannot find the parts in the local autoparts store or the web...
do you know the part number or the link to the Mazda OEM online parts store...
Thanks...

OEM Mazda part only! Did you check electrical resistance on the sensor's terminals? I wouldn't replace the part if it checks out okay. You should be getting a CEL and blinking "O/D Off" indicators concurrently. Only one code? Remember to check for others stored in PCM and TCM. I'm looking at a 2002 parts book and found Mazda part #FN01-21-550 (Pulse Generator -- typical unusual Mazda name!). Simple procedure to replace it... although manual states to remove air box component -- I think there's enough wiggle room to work under it. Remember to lube the new sensor's o-ring with clean ATX fluid.
