check engine light (cel) is the icon of an engine on the instrument cluster like seat belt, oil, etc.
if the engine icon lights up while you're driving it means you have a cel.

I had similar results when my intake butterfly screw went loose in my system and got stuck. It wouldn't keep a steady idle, and the CEL would go on and off intermittently. I suggest taking it to the dealer if under warranty and getting it checked out.

with his current mods the dealership might have a problem covering anything under warranty

you can run to an autozone and get them to plug into your car to tell you what the cel is for.

go to advance or autozone and have them check the cel (which doesn't cost anything).
right down the cel(s) you're pulling and look them up, then you'll know where to go from there.

^What he said.
It needs to be under 300 pixels tall. Git er done!
Also, if you come down to the garage, I can take care of your car. I'm located near Atlantic City.

if he would lose a screw he would hear a clunk. Since he's not describing the EXTREMELY loud clunk and bucking/stalling problems, then he just needs to clean the EGR.
Trust me, I lost 5 screws on ViCS system...the worst out of all people as far as I know.

My screw got pinned between the butterfly valves, and I constantly had a rough idle, and the CEL would go on and off.

I've had that happen twice.
Dealer had replaced half of my motor under warranty 1 year before recall was issued by MAZDA Corp. 5249 bucks in replacement parts...
