Mike Maskarich describes most car thefts as transportation thefts. "They are stealing older cars and using them to joyride, to commit other crimes, and to get from Point A to Point B," he told Oakland's Tri-Valley Herald newspaper, noting that many car thefts are crimes of opportunity. "People pull into a convenience store, leave their keys in the car, come back, and it's gone," Maskarich added.

* When you park the car, shut the windows and lock the doors.
* Park in well-lit areas at night.
* Don't leave electronics lying on the front seat.
* Use a car alarm, wheel or brake lock, or other theft warning or deterrent device.
