We get 94 here but I use 89 becuase it gives the car a really nice sound. 87's fine but makes the car sound ricey.

i think i've used 87 once... in it's 5 year lifespan i didnt like the feel. I might go 89 if gas really skyrockets =(
when I bought my car, the rep. said that 87 is good enough, but I see the difference in the gas milage a bit. I used 87 for like first 3 gas tanks and then stayed on 89 octane. On 89 octane I get about 410 miles on full tank. I tried 91 octane for the past 4 gas tanks and my gas milage actually went up a bit (same gas station Exxon). Now I get about 430-440 on full gas tank....well still ending up with a gallon maybe 1.5 gallon in the tank when filling up. Oh yea and I dont drive under 3k rpm either, hehe. Plus I feel (my own opinion) that my idle is NOT as rough with 91 octane than 89.

i have an automatic so i dont have the freedom of that 5th gear so mine mileage is pretty ok i guess like it's city driven
I am only getting about 25 to 27 mpg city in my car. I use 87 octane and always have but it seems like in the last year the gas mileage has gotten worse. Any reason for this? Is the lower octane causing more build up in the egr? I am very maticulous (forgive the spelling) about my car and little stuff like this bothers me any ideas?

The lower octane is better for the car. I just prefer the 89 as it feels the best. NIce muscular idle and really throaty when I get on it. 93 makes the car sound farty.
With the lower octane (89) I get an idle so good that I have to check if the cars on.

you guys need to read this.
its from a company that MAKES gasoline... and why premium is pointless and no different than regular if you don't have an MSP or MP3...
http://quiktrip.com/gasoline/myth.asp
The word premium doesn't have anything to do with the quality of gasoline. It has more to do with the price.
Premium gasoline costs more for two reasons. It costs more to make. And, there's more profit added to premium by refiners and retailers. But, premium gasoline doesn't cost more because it is better.
Premium gasoline has a higher octane rating. Higher octane is only one thing: an index which indicates the gasoline's ability to overcome knocking or pinging in engines. That's all. If your car doesn't knock or ping on lower octane gasoline, paying for higher octane is a waste of your money.
Higher octane does not mean better quality and it will not result in more power, better performance, greater gas mileage or anything else.
Some high performance cars were designed to run on premium gasoline. In that case, the owner's manual will clearly state you should use only premium gasoline in that vehicle. That's what premium was made for.
Why does QuikTrip expose the premium myth? After all, we stand to make more money as long as some people continue to believe the myth.
The economics of doing the right thing are pretty simple. QuikTrip gives you the facts rather than trying to sell you myths. You test the facts and find they are true. You save money. You buy more gasoline from QuikTrip. We overcome any short-term loss by selling more gasoline.

I use 89 just because its the lowest I can go and its the cheapest. My 99 ES runs just fine with it too.

good point, but I dont need people to tell me that I dont need 89 or 91 octane.....Also I dont need people to tell me that my car drives fine on 87 octane because it doesn't. If the motor is stock, thats ofcourse different story.

im gonna give this 89 octane thing a try for like 3 tanks, if i dont like it i'll just have to eat the higher octane prices...

I got 34 mpg on the last tank with 87 octane. And with 89 it averaged about 30 :bs:
Go figure.

I run 85 octane in colorado...
Thats what regular unleaded is here. Ive heard the altitude helps the car not need as much.
Anyways, the car runs fine, and I cant tell any difference switching between grades.

The air is less dense up there so the pressure isn't as great on the compression stroke, therefore you don't need as high an octane to prevent detonation.
