DETROIT — Pontiac will take the wraps off a new G6 GXP coupe, powered by a 3.9-liter V6, at the upcoming New York auto show.

The latest Pontiac showcar will "test media and public reaction before a decision on production is made," the company said in a statement.

Pontiac said the G6 GXP will be outfitted with a six-speed manual transmission. Engine output is 270 horses and 259 pound-feet of torque. The exterior features a redesigned front fascia with an integrated lower air dam and twin air scoop hood. The new rear fascia has dual chrome-tipped exhausts and a "hammerhead" spoiler. Side rocker panels, 19-inch wheels, vented cross-drilled brake rotors and a lowered suspension add to the GXP's ground-hugging look.

In the cabin, the Pontiac showcar has red chrome trim on the instrument cluster, center stack and door controls, along with red leather seat and door panel inserts.

The GXP performance series made its debut in 2003 with the Bonneville GXP, followed in 2005 by the Grand Prix GXP. Pontiac says the GXP edition accounts for 30 percent of all Grand Prix retail sales. The Solstice GXP will be launched this fall.

What this means to you: This may be the biggest G6 news since the Oprah giveaway nearly two years ago.

VQ 3.5L V6 = 298HP or 85HP/L
GXP 3.9L V6 = 270HP or 69HP/L
LS2 6.0L V8 = 400HP or 66HP/L

I was going to make a point about GM needing to make this GPX motor at least as powerful per liter as the Corvette but when I did the math it didn't turn out as hoped. Why do they need 6.0L to get 400HP? And if they really use the cam-in-block (read: pushrod) design for its packaging efficiency why not stuff a detuned LS2 into everything GM sells?

GM sucks...

Oh, and if they are not competing with the G35 because the G35 is RWD then who ARE they competing with? Anyone looking in this price/performance range is looking at the G35, MS6, WRX STi, EVO, etc.

GM sucks...

the sad thing is that they almost have a nice looking car there. I mean take off the hood scoops, and whatever you call that thing on the trunk and completely redo the materials in the interior ( for once ) and you would have a decent looking car.

Right, the car looks good...the only thing I would change is the looks and you'd have a real winner.[/SARCASM]

How many people buy a car because its ALMOST a good design. Especially in the sports coupe market...those cars are all about looks and performance. The G6 has neither!

Plus, would you buy this over the Mazdaspeed3?

my point was only that they can't even get the looks right. I mean who approves these designs for GM???? Anyone with any taste will look at 99% of their cars and say CRAP. There are some obvious mistakes with this car that even a moron designer should look and say what are they thinking??? That car could easily be much better looking with some common sense. This car is not as ugly as most of their designs and with a different spoiler at least, it would be much better.

I don't see what you all see. I see a nice sleek looking FWD car that has both good gas mileage and power. It's on par with the god ugly sti and the big wings of the EVOs. One guy said it right. This is a car that middle aged guys like me would buy. I don't really want some high school kid looking car with a big wing on it (MSP EVO STI and just for shits COBALT SS). The inside looks just as good as any of the cars listed as well. The Mazda’s dash is just as lacking. But these cars are not high-end cars, so you kind of expect that.

GM’s downfall wasn’t with the Grand Prix anyways. It was with the Chevy and Oldsmobile cars. They let the Cavalier and that POS Malibu hang around to long. That and they camero’s dipping sales for the last 3-4yrs it was here. Olds really hurt them money wise. Then they had to play cover up and make up which never happened.

People would take you guys a little more seriously with you observations were always the same. Unless it’s a Mazda it’s always god ugly this how could they that or cheap this. It’s not a luxury car, it’s a mid level performance TUNED car! That doesn’t mean it’s a performance car, just a little better then the other one.

And why would they ever put a 400 hp engine in a FWD car? That car would be in the shop for warranty work every day. The wheel hop would tear it apart. Now give them a while and you might see it in there when they bring the RWD cars back. To me, that’s were GM, Ford, and Dodge went wrong. They never should have left the RWD platform. Look at dodge, they are making money left and right. Once they got rid of the Intrepid and started putting power back in their cars and trucks. GM will follow, they will be back. How long it will take, who knows.

The fin is way too long/big. Also, why do they always put that godawful double-scoop intake on the hoods? Ram Air V yo!! Get over it. A subtle scoop (cowl or otherwise) would be fine.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Well I have to say that double grill is way to long. They should have stopped it and gave it a real bumper. Other than that it's ok.

I question the rear visibility out of the thing. Giant whale tail, almost no rear windows, high belt line. Another cabin I would feel claustrophoic driving. I would get the feeling the cheap plastic is coming after me driving that for a half hour.

The only car remotely interesting to me to come from GM is the Solstice (in GXP form even more so), only because of the way it came about. A young designer with little real world experience, a desparate CEO willing to try something completely fresh, and some of the best styling to his a US automaker in years. This is the direction a car company needs to go to revitailze their name.

This abomination G6 is just frightful. If they are to elicit fear on the road, they should do it with performance numbers to back it up, not with styling scary enough to frighten ghosts away.

I must say, however, I was impressed with the G6 skin when it was oringinally released. This with the tacky add-on bits are just annoying and intrusive.

LOL, so I take it you don't like it?????

Well looking at the user ratings the G6 so far has had no real big problems. Every one likes the power, some almost complain about the low torq. I admit this is a strech, but the actual GXP wont look like this. It most likly will be tuned down abit. I don't the the big tale as a problem, most people can't really see out the tinted window anyways. While there a few things that I think are too flashy this will sell well. But the thing I hate is that with the way the car designs have gone, they all look like the g35-350z. Soon every car will look alike.

Well, this is an automotive forum, and GM is the worst example of automotive business practive EVER. Plus, when you know every new car they come out with has to be a hit for them to survive, then you begin to take a more ctitical view of their decisions and products. It speaks volumes about GM if they can not, with all of their engineering resources, design a fresh, mature looking sports coupe.

wtf?? Yeah, i have 0 rearward and side visibility in my car, because i've got tinted windows... good thing they don't let you tint the front, or hell i might as well be driving blind.... (poke)

On topic... i liked the first picture a bit, but the autoshow pics turned me off. And besides, its a GM.

I was looking at some pics from the Sema 2005 and Pontiac showed a G6 Peformance Coupe. Which looks just like these pics. The front bumper and rear spoiler looks like it designed by RKsport.
