View Full Version : Server Update!
Hi all,
We've updated the server. However, as will all updates, nothing will be perfect the first time. It will take a few days to iron out the bugs.
So, before you any of you go ballistic about bugs or issues, consider the 2 options I had.
a) close the forum indefinitely until I manage to get *all* the bugs out
b) open the forum and fix the bugs as they arrive
I figure b) was better option, since it lets you use the forum immediately.
That being said, please put all bug reports in the help / feedback forum.
Any flames about this topic will be deleted on the spot.
Thank you for understanding.

It will take a few days to iron out the bugs.
I use SeaMonkey, Firefox, and IE as a last resort, and none of them work with the items that contain a downward arrow. Click on one of those and nothing happens. The other links work. For instance these work:
Home
Forum Index
User CP
These do not work
Thread Tools
Search this Thread
Rate Thread
Display modes
Quick Links
Search
Oddly IE shows URLs when the mouse hovers over the broken ones, but the two Mozilla based browsers show no URL.

Thanks Antoine and Enry. The site is responding so much faster than before. No more copying my long PM's to the clipboard in case the site wouldn't respond when I sent them.
As for the withdrawal, I totally understand! I got back in last last night from driving my "new" 323 GTX back from New York to Tennessee, and the first thing I wanted to do was check out the forums...and I couldn't! You take it for granted until it's not there. However, I knew that an upgrade was in the works and tried to hang on until it was done. Hell of a job you did getting things swapped over that fast. As a former IT guy, I know that there's a lot more to it than most would ever know. I'll let you guys know if I notice any irregularities.

I think this was already discussed (this thread is moving very quickly). Are you using Internet Explorer? make sure you have the latest version, or do what I highly recommend and download Mozilla Firefox from www.mozilla.org. It's free, fast, flexible, and highly functional, and it does all that without the pesky security vulnerabilities that keep cropping up with Internet Explorer. Plus, the interface will look very familiar, it is a very easy transition for any former IE user I've talked to.

Oh ok, it's probably just enry working hard getting the bugs out. I haven't seen the icons missing in firefox yet. The only thing I'm experiencing right now is the smilies interface not working. Scratch that, actually none of the buttons in the messaging interface are responding at all. hmm

Actually, when I click to insert emoticons it scrolls back to the top of the text box, but it was probably doing that before (the message in the box just wasn't long enough).
(first)(first)(first)(first) everything is fine if I use the editor that shows formatting (click the switch editor mode in the top right).
Actually I don't have any extensions running right now though because the Firefox 2 alpha I was trying out disabled all of them. Running any extensions on your install of firefox?
Edit: the comment in the first script that was giving you an error right above that block of code says:

I've tried it with Firefox in Linux, Windows XP SP2, and Mac OS X without any problems currently. Maybe the Firefox process is still running even when you close it, it has happened to me on Windows machines before.
Other than that I really don't know though.

It worked though? Are you running an optimized build of Firefox for 64-bit systems or just the standard windows 2k/XP build?

Standard 2k/xp build. Unfortunately, I can't find a lot of "optimized" stuff :(
The editing was in one of your recent posts in a FS thread. If you can't notice it, then I guess I did a good job, eh? :)

So for rep points, I have to use Firefox.
For everything else, I have to use IE.

There was somthing buggy with Firefox's editor plugin and the new version. I had to exit FireFox, I.E., and Outlook to get things working again. If you can't get the WYSIWYG to work then try rebooting.

I join the club now. Suddenly on my thinkpa dwhich I was using to view the forums all day yesterday all the buttons have stopped working. I've tried killing the firefox process but that hasn't changed anything, I'm going to give her a restart though since I haven't actually restarted in months (sleep/hibernate FTW)

Two more things.
First, I uploaded some photos yesterday to a separate folder...
http://www.msprotege.com/members/chuyler1/RX8RimsOnP5/
But there are no thumbnails.
Second, in the previous version when I used the advanced reply form there was a button called "Insert Images" or something that would pop up a window with my photo gallery. Under the photo icons was a link to insert the image directly into the form textfield. This "Insert Images" button appears to be missing now.

i get a similar error except it's
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 40 bytes) in /home/mazdamp3/www/vb354/includes/functions_search.php on line 196

it's happened since the update happened and i've tried from IE and firefox, from work and from home with no luck
memory issue should be fixed now.

I'm getting something similar. If I am at the main forum page, and I click on a main section link (3rd generation protege for example) I will get a 404 error. If I go back and click the link 1 or 2 more times it will then work.

In Firefox on a number of computers I often get a file download window for various .php files when I click on different things.
It didn't do this before on this forum, and it doesn't do it on other forums now, so I'm assuming that this is still just a bug here.

For the last couple of days I've been seeing blank windows come up. For instance, I'll click on "advanced search" and it will bring up a window frame with nothing in it. The browser's "view source" shows no HTML at all - it's a completely empty document. Hitting refresh a time or two eventually brings up the window. This is with Seamonkey 1.0 from a couple of different computers.

New issue, as of 8:15AM PST. I'm seeing bizarre formatting errors in the "reply" window. Hard to describe but it looks dreadful. Text I think where some sort of menu buttons should have been. Also the left column in each forum is doing odd things. In this list there are many duplications of odd text. Also sometimes I'm seeing: you have N post(s) in this thread, last DATE. Where N and DATE are filled in appropriately. That feature might be useful but rather than being in the left column it would be better placed in the last post column. In most forums that field is empty and formatted like this it's just a waste of space.
In the P5 forum the left column has a plain text "Announcement" heading which seems to be duplicated from the columns just to the right which has a bold "Announcement" heading. It isn't an announcement though, it's the messages about "you have N posts...". The "last post" and "reverse sort order" entries and titles are offset about 1/4 of a letter in height. Ie, like this but less extreme:
last post
_________ reverse sort order

New issue, as of 8:15AM PST.
Seamonkey 1.0.1 on XP SP2 (Pro)
On Firefox 1.5.0.2 most of this holds but in addition there are links in the forum thread listing that say "Go To First New Post". These immediately precede the thread title and are about 4 points lower on the line. These are not visible in Seamonkey.
On Internet Exploder there is a red check box next to the "Go to the First New Post". The formatting is odd there too.
It's really slow on all browsers, I suspect the call backs to the server on the links are overloading the server.
As for "Go to first new post" I think the current: 1 2 3 .. last
Is pretty good, but maybe add "end" or "bottom" after last to place the browser on the first new post in the thread, which pretty much by definition will also be the last post in the thread.
I suggest you roll back the current set of changes, the interface is really messed up right now.

New issue, as of 8:15AM PST.
Seamonkey 1.0.1 on XP SP2 (Pro)
It now says "multi page thread" before the 1 2 3 ... last. That extra bit of text is only useful for the absolute beginner who might not have ever used a forum before. How about using this instead:
page: 1 2 3 ... last
It conveys the same meaning in less space.
The formatting errors in the REPLY page are driving me bonkers. Please roll those changes back ASAP!

There is a thread about this issue in the Website Help / Feedback forum, I think it's called "server issues" but it should be right near the top of the page.
