I don't have one of these on my 3 but if it's like every other one I've ever had on other cars its just held in place by clips. I would be very surprised if there was any drilling involved when attached.

The Mazda deflector clips into the opening. No holes. It quiets things down quite a bit too.

I actually added one to my hatch. I makes a huge difference in wind noise. It was well worth the slight cosmetic change for a quieter, less turbulent ride.

I've always hated stuff like that on my previous cars because I just didnt like the way it looked, but when my sunroof is open on this car, it is so damn loud I am actually thinking of putting one on.
I wish there was something a bit smaller and more streamlined I could put there that wouldn't look so bad.

Just put the moonroof deflector on my 2006 hatch, there are 2 clips and no drilling - it's a 15 min. job, 30 if you are mechanically challenged. It does cut the wind noise down about 30% to 40% or so.

If you want to decrease the noise on the cheap, just zip-tie that built-in deflector in the down position. Noise will decrease dramatically.

I would have to say it's good. If you don't want air in the cabin, why would you open a window? (scratch)

I was going to suggest the same thing as goldwing did with ziptying the deflector down. You actually zip tie the pieces in the grooves on the side, and depending on how you do it it will still pop up some, just not as much. Try driving with the sunroof open, and then just reach up and lower the deflector some with your hand. You'll quickly see where you actually want the deflector to sit. Too high = too much noise. Too low = too much wind into the cabin (which makes me think bugs will fly into my car as they get pushed over it). In the middle = just right. :D
