I'm thinking about painting my calipers. Does anyone know if the stock mazda protege 2002 es contain asbestos in the brake pads and if it does is it really dangerous enough to cause me to not do so? Thanks.

brake pad have not had asbestos in them since the late 70s. Protege pads are 100% free of asbestos.

I'm taking it Aricjm is correct, but even if the pads did have asbestos, it wouldn't cause you any harm. You need roughly 10 years of continuous exposure to asbestos to be worried :)

Wow, glad to hear this. I just painted my calipers tonight. Used the wire brush attachment on a power drill to clean off the calipers and I breathed a lot of that shit in. Only in hindsight did I realize I'm an idiot and should've worn a respirator mask. Oh well...
