Hi guys,

Have a MSP and was out today crusing around town, shifted down from 4th to 3rd gear and somehow missed a gear and now my tranny seems to be messed. The whole gearbox seems to be now easier to shift into any gear and that includes 3rd, but whenever downshifting to 3rd I get the "missed shift" crunch that hurts to think about.

I just switched from the stock gear oil or whatever the previous owner had been running to castrol syntec 75W90 oil and it has improved the shifting alot. I have noticed though that some shifts will bind sometimes especially shifting into second when the cars not hot. Do you think this is a result of the synthetic oil ? OR have I lost a syncro or something?

Thanks for your help in advance.

All the gears work except 3rd right? Then sounds like you tore 3rd gear.

75w/90 synthetic is the factory fluid also.

How fast were you going when you missed the gear? Did you accidently hit 1st?

I think if he did that, his rods would be somewhere on the road right now. lol

I think it'd be his clutch/pressure plate first, but with our rods, who knows...

thanks for the replies guys....lets see where to start.

OK i've been double clutching before in the past with no probs....even with the synthetic for the week or so its been in there. I did notice first to second would crunch slightly when cold if not careful. So the clutch pressure plate may well be the case.

I can hit every single gear shifting up......the only thing is downshifting from fouth to third will meet with resistance UNTIL I slow down enough and then it will pop right into third no problem at all.....sounds like a clutch issue to me????

I was not racing it or hitting third hard when this happened.....so I was quite surprised.....it contacted metal to metal but it wasen't something ridiculous that you'd think would blow it...ie missing a gear at 6k WOT :)

My mechanic friend will have a look at it tmr.....

Oh yea one other thing....I just got back from dads place where I can work on car and changed out the fluid.....it looks rather dark not very clean looking...remember this has been in the car less than 2 weeks....perhaps some silver in there although using a magnet in the fluid turned up nothing.....i'm wondering if the synthetic cleaned out the tranny some more due to its first time synthetic use? I put in some regular castrol 80w90 to be safe which is also recommended for limited slip diffs.......it did not effect my shifting at all....seemed to make no difference.

took it in to mazda and they are gonna rip out the tranny and fix it under warranty. Nice of them, be interesting to see exactly what caused it. They will also replace my clutch if needed for the cost of clutch, virtually no labour as its under warranty. Gives me some faith in mazda and that they do look after their product.......thanks for the replies guys.

is it really that hard to get warranty on your MSP?

I was lucky with the dealer near me, that I'm now working at, but most people have a tought time. Especially since it sounds like they're helping you out with the clutch a little bit, as well.
