So is that intercooler filling up the mouth :)
Saw those pics a while back...definitely interesting to see the differences between the concept and the final production model.

with the exception of the rear, I find the rest of the car hideous.

Does anyone remember the Protege Street 2000? I saw it at the philly auto show several years ago. It was pretty cool concept.
edit: I think those pictures are of it! I am trying to find more information on it. This concept was before the MP3 & msp. Wonder why they decided to make the mp3, then start making the msp? why not just start with the msp......

Amen brother, that would be too sweet.

why the dick did mazda remove all these options. the concept also came with hardpipes, along with the fmic obviously. i'd kill for a sunroof alone

Ditto. Great how the car had evolved from that though. Atleast Mazda woke up and realized, holy cow this thing is ugly, why don't we make it hot!

I'd say if Mazda incorporated a FMIC or at least a bigger SMIC this car could be in a whole new level of bragging rights, while stock. Now to seal the deal with a sunroof, that would be premium.

Amen to that - I find the exterior of the car hideous as well; however the seats, FMIC and sunroof in a way give the concept MSP the justice it deserves.
the concept drawing wasnt bad though.

I guess beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. I think it looks horrible. Of course, those wheels don't help.
It appears we got the concept spoiler on the 03 models, which I've always liked.
If Mazda was trying to bring this car in at 20 grand, then it's pretty obvious why the FMIC, hardpipes and Sparco seats didn't make the final cut. I don't like the factory SMIC either, but at least they had one in the global parts bin to throw on there. There's no telling what we would have gotten if they hadn't.
