i like the e46 m3.
many think of it as the rich kids sports car, but it's got some aggresive lines, and the performance is great.
if you have the money, go for it.

obviously everyone loves the M3, but i say dont do it!! the M3 is amazing sports machine, dont get me wrong, but it doesnt take anyone special to make an M3 fast...it IS a rich kids sports car. stay in the familia and go get an RX-8

'rich kids sports car' who cares. you buy a car for the car not for other people's personal opinions about your character. and oh no, what if they do think someone who drives an m3 is rich? blasphemy. your future is tarnished. k i took this way too far.

well i pretty much decided after i got the ins quote it was only $20 more per month than the msp and that meant nothing to me. i can afford the car but i wanna hold out for a great deal. plus sell my msp. im impatience tells me to buy the first one i see that i somewhat like but i have to be patient and wait any other good search engines other than autotrader and ebay?

If u can afford to fix it when something goes wrong, go for it. Parts for that car are NOT cheap at all.......if u can get some kind of extended warranty on that beast, id say do it.
Protege Parts = Cheap
M3 Parts = $Money$

pffttt rich kids car, 90% of m3 buyers at our bmw store are not kids. and i wouldnt get a rx8. same money and you get a slow ass car that if you mod to make fast, you will be puttin new motors in it.

haha, well, here in boston, the majority of the guys i see driving M3's ARE spoiled rich kids, i live right in between Boston College and Boston University, and it seems like the only fast car these kids know about is the M3. dont get it twisted, i love the M3 as much as the next guy, i guess im just a little jaded by it. if it was me, id rather go for something with a little more character
The majority of DRIVERS between BC and BU are rivch spoiled kids... ;)
ANYWAY, stick with the MSP, it OWNS the M3, can beat it in any performance area:
- Stereo does fancy tricks -> MSP
- Front wheel drive snow traction -> MSP
- Reasonably low maintenance -> MSP
- Sparco pedal covers -> MSP
- Autocross handling -> MSP
NOW... if you want DYNAMIC performance, and have a fat wallet (and patience when she breaks), get the M3. What others think about you doesn't matter.
Don't search exclusively on Autotrader, find a BMW bulletin board like this one and you can buy from an enthusiast!

lol i have they are on crack they think its made of gold and want too much the maintenence thing doesnt really bother me(it does just not alot ) my uncle is a bmw/audi certified mechanic i would get everything at cost and minimal labor the hard part is being patient waiting for a good deal cause if i wanted to be stupid i could go buy one tomorrow but i would regret it later

I have always been dazzled by the M3 it is a car i would love to own, honestly i test drove a 330 ci with the M sport package... it was a thrill to drive. Only downers are like everyone else says is the repair costs, now their new vehicles have amazing service policies, and they don't break often... My dad used to own a 540i fast ass car and when you take it to bmw for just an oil change... they treat it like a baby, check everything, clean it out and wash it so its nice and brand new looking. Honestly right now i could afford to go with an M3 and maybe soon i will but i do value the MSP and how One of a kind it is... i mean if you sit and think about it, we have a "limited production" car! Even though it seems like the msp is a little weak in some aspects i love the car, and would be like shooting me in the foot if i traded it. Bascially, I love both cars its hard to choose but right now i will stay with the msp as well.
I also think its funny how alot of members here are bmw fans... I have talked to a few others and everyone who owns a msp seems to love the bmw m3's and like i said i have wanted one for years lol. Well just wanted to put my two cents in.

The M3 is an awesome machine. But, I really don't like the average owners. Okay, who cares! BUT, I' m saving already for the EVO X, have you seen the pics? It makes the M3 look like an retiree car!! I'll enjoy my MSP another 2 years or so while saving $$$ and then...
Or maybe the new Corrado that will come out, or the new Skyline... lots of good stuff to come in the next couple of years!

i love the M3 as much as the next guy, but it seems like the easy way out to me. its like, you buy the car and youre done. you dont have to do anything else to it because its already perfect, and the only guy i know who HAS modded it went and bought a civic hatch and turbo'd it because he was disappointed with the way the M3 responded to the mods he did to it.

Personally, I'd take an RX-8 over an M3 anyday. I respect the M3's performance and pedigree, but it does nothing for me. The RX-8, on the other hand... ZOMG. The styling, the rotary engine, the four-door sports coupe-ness, t3h Mazdaness...

Get anything with the 2.0L Turbo AUDI/VW engine. Rotary sucks IMO.

I’d take an M3 or an S4 over the RX-8 any day of the week, no questions asked.
The M3 and S4 are the uber hottest.
If you can afford it, then ditch the MSP.

... Rotary sucks IMO.
That's what I hear from everyone I know who's ever had one, but if you can afford upkeep on a M3, you could probably afford it on an RX-8.
I dunno. It's shape is so sexy.
Anyways, the M3 is kinda common where I live too. That was one of the reasons I hunted down an MSP; you don't see many of 'em and nobody is sure what it is. (cabpatch)
But, if you can afford the car you want AND the upkeep, then by all means, go for it.

Exactly, the RX-8 looks nice and all, but its not very powerful. You would have to sink major cash into it to get it to perform with an S4 or M3. And I wouldn't want the hassle with the rotary engine.
I was a big fan of the old 1.8T's and from what I read the new 2.0T is even better, plus you can get the DSM gear box, which is kick ass.
You could go with the new Audi A3 with the 2.0T and mod that alittle and it would be a kick ass ride. Probably, best ride for the money spent IMO.

Here are the times that Top Gear tested, on the track:
BMW M3 - 1.31.8
Nissan 350Z - 1.31.8
Mazda RX8 - 1.31.8
The last one is the cheapest of the three! ;)

Didn't they stop producing the Supra in the early to mid-nineties? That means you'd be lucky to find one at least ten years old. And you can all but forget about it having low miles...
MikeAwesome42
03-21-2006, 10:06 PM
they stopped producing the supra in either 98 or 99, but the special edition 1997 supra twin turbo with the T-tops is the most sought after one

I was driving down the tollway where I live manhandling traffic, leaning on the gas every now and then just to hear the turbo whine and the sonic boom from my exhaust. The car was washed and waxed and the tires were shining. Then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw this Supra merginging onto the freeway. It was purple and kitted, but the bodywork was flawless. Supra road presence vs. MSP road presence is like... Ouch.

But it's well worth it, if you got the money.

The supra is a nice looking car. The M3 is awesome. It really is German Engineering at it's best. It's conservative, well balanced... and a whole lot more money than the MSP.
As a matter of fact.... My family (more specifically my dad) has had bimmers in the domain for a long time. When I got my 99 protege, I noticed how much it resembled my pops '85 318i. 'cept it was 20k cheaper! That is what the protege is! It's the poorman's BMW 3 series. The MSP is the poorman's BMW M3. The only thing is, is that our cars won't last as long as a bimmer. That '85 318i lasted 11 years. The odometer stopped working at 300k MILES about 7-8 years in and the only major work that was done was a new clutch somewhere around 400k miles (really don't know, but we estimated that that car had close to 500k when it finally died). That is why the parts are more expensive. They actually work properly with the car.
This is also why you find so many MSP owners like the Bimmer. They wanted the Bimmer in the first place, but couldn't afford it. So they got the next best thing (even as I did :))
(yes I know that there are subtle differences between the two cars, headlights look different, interior is fancier, etc, so don't flame over minute details...lol)
If you want a million-gazillion-quatrilion-yabba-dabba-doo-zillion hp, listen to the guys and get the TT Supra. If you want to save money to buy a house or something down the line... stay with the MSP. If you want an elegant car, with power when you need it, absolutely 100% get the M3. It is more than just the 330horses under the hood. Those horses won't pop the block by turning the power up a bit, nor will they let you down two months after the warranty ends. Econo cars are known to do such things, because they are built cheaper.
FlyinMSP
03-24-2006, 11:03 AM
That's well summarized. Except that I didn't want a Bimmer in the first place, but a WRX-Sti (if I were in the States it would be the Evo, but we don't have it in Canada). The M3 is gorgeous but for the same money, and cheaper, there are lot of other truly nice cars to choose from, and some of them offer a better value overall
