Heya

Got the new Mazda Bug Deflector today. Only took 35 min to install. Looks fine. A highway test no vibs or noticible noise either.
Cost about 75 Bux Canadian.

Nice...

Does it attach to the hood with two sided tape or by screws?

I'd like to get on as well. The only think Mazda sells in the US for hood protection is a front mask.

You guys get all the cool accessories up there...

Hmm, worried about it discoloring the paint job, but I'd like to see more pics, day time ones maybe? Looks kinda cool, but hard to tell.

Are we going to get this in the US?

Wuster - It comes with bump stops that you place on your hood (to prevent it from rubbing on the hood and thereby causing the paint to wear away and rust to form), and where the clips slip over the edge of the hood, there is tape that you put on the hood. You do no drilling at all; where the weather-stripping runs along the edge of the hood, there are clips/plugs that 'fasten' it to the hood. You simply remove two of these plugs, and replace them with washers and screws to hold the hood deflector onto the car. Very easy to put on/take off.

Kid Red - I've had mine on the car for nearly 4 years now, and I can assure you there is no discolouration whatsoever.

To my knowledge, the deflector is only available in Canada. Like Zoom5zoom said, they're about $75CA.

I realize I've got a protege5, but they all mount basically the same way.

Cool, so it's the same set up I have on my Honda CRV. When I was searching for a bug deflector for the CRV, I came across several that attaches with two sided tape. Which prevents you from removing it to wash and wax the hood underneath.

It works great on the CRV and I haven't experience any color fade or anything issues.

Dang it. I may have to sneak across the border and get one... :)

For 32 bux to cover up the steel on your winter tires - is one helluva a deal - they do look good. Thanks for the pics! Luckily I don't need to pull the switch for the winter here in Victoria.

I wish I could see a pic of this on a light colored 5 outside in the sun. So $75 USA? How much to ship to Florida?

Anyone know about the bra? Do they really discolor your hood? DO you really have to take if completely off and let it completely dry after every time is gets wet? I live in Florida, so if true, I might as well not even where it 2-3 months during the rainy season. But I like the bra looks.

I also want a stubby antenna. I hate the tall chopstick looking one we have now.

Hi Kid Red

Yes the bra will cause discolouration. Also when you have dirt trap underneath, it can act like a sandpaper. Highly not recommened.

Yup, had that problem with a the bra. I bought one for the first new car I ever bought. A sliver Ford Probe GT, and it turned the paint on the hood (that was under the bra) into a milky white color.

stay far away from bra's.....well, you know what I mean :)

I've been using these deflectors on my car now for at least 10 years. Bra's were a pain. Dirt gets under them, scratches your paint, paint fades etc. You are not supposed to leave a bra on 24/7. The original idea of a bra was for long trips but of course people are lazy and leave it on. The deflector does a great job with keeping rock chips off the hood. I won't even buy a car now without one. I don't think I have one rock chip on my hood yet....knock on wood. And I live in a place that uses sand on the roads in the winter.

I've also got the same winter rims....lol!

You know, I think I got the Euro 5 and the Canadian 5 mixed up. Your front end is like ours, it;s the Euro one that has the lesser cross pieces on the grill.

So to confirm, tape on the hood is required? What's the long term damage from that? I'm weary of tape, same goes for those window visors- they are tape on also.

was98strat
05-25-2006, 01:06 PM
has anyone tried the clear 3M tape that you can apply for the same effect? It's a clear vinyl that you apply to the front edge of the hood and bumper area? Looks like a good idea to me.

Hey KidRed - I had that clear tape on the bug deflector I had on my VW Golf for 7 years before a big rock smashed my entire shield. When I took the tape off there was a bit of sticky residue that was very stubborn to wash off - but with a little 'goo-gone' it came off and you would have never known it was there.

Does anyone know if they make a clear deflector?

Kid Red

Mike- THanks for the chime in, good to know. The Goo-Gone didn't damage the paint or clear coat either?

Anyone else have the bug deflector? I have the Silver 5 and was wondering what a dark plastic deflector would look like.

Not that I recall - it was quite awhile ago now but I did make sure I didn't use too much and then washed the car right away. For the record - It was a light blue metallic paint.

I just installed my deflector last week. It was an original Mazda part from the dealer and was a better deflector than the one for my old Ford Focus.
The tape is supplied where the clips attach and it is quality stuff...
Cheaper than the one for my wifes 2000 civic ( $125.00 )
By the way, my 5 is black so the black deflector looks cool !

Be worried about the little rubber things that go on the hood to insure the deflector doesnt come in contact with the hood (The "Bump stops"), they leve little circle dents in the hood in there shape from when the deflector hits them , did so on my Protege, and I took the thing off before I hit 1000klm

What ever you do DONT put one on the direct center on the hood (On the line) put it off center, if put there 100% you will have a fucked up center line.

They arnt very noticeable, but I KNOW they are there, but F-this hood when I get a CF one.

I just drove from Breezewood to New Stanton, and there was all sorts of crap flying around on the road. Most was kicked up by the truckers, but alot of it was from the "construction" on the turnpike.

Thanks for the part number. Just got my Red GT on Monday and asked the dealer last week for the cost of the bug deflector and he said there wasn't one.

I took mine in to get tinted on Wednesday and saw a pamphlet for something called Stoneshield by Avery Dennison. It is a protective film installed on the hood as an alternative to the Bug Deflector. Supposed to be virtually invisible, will not alter the appearance of the vehicle and comes with a 3 year warranty.

Spoke to the dealer and he said the cost was $150 for 12 inch shield and about $200 for 24 inch.

Has anyone seen this or heard about it? Let me know what your thoughts are.

Well it arrived today and it looks great. No need for pics cause it looks just like the website but here is one. I followed the directions to apply a hair dryer to get it to form around the corners. I won't even consider it.. however, I never used the plastic feet that came with the kit because I never intended my installations to be permanent to begin with (was going to use them only for road trips, but later on the look grew on me) so I got a bunch of smaller ones (can't buy those big ones at the store) from home depot, glued them on top of each other till they're about the same height as the originals and then put them on the car.... works good and I don't have to give a shit when one falls off... I just make another one and put the new one on

DONT GO THROUGH THE CARWASH WITH IT ON, dammage to it and your hood.

The washers apply pressure to it and it then applies pressure to the "bump spots" and that dents your hood (or dents the paint, but its tha same difference), & or scratches the hood where a "bump stop" might of fell off. and it could also break the bug deflector itself.

However your all good if you pop it off before you go in :)

Well I had both type (deflector and bra) and had bad experiences with both.
1. Bras
I really don't know why they continue to do those crap. Mine decolored my hood, higly scratch it becaude of dirt inside. Ugly indeed

2. Deflectors
Well the dumbass that installed it glued the rubber pads on the deflector and not on the car (omg) . Well it was my 1st card and I did not know, but vibrations damaged the paint to the point i could saw underneath.

So, let say a deflector is correctly installed, does it work well with the 5? I do some 150km trips once in a while and bugs are common on the road lol.

Hey I was rereading this - really think about getting one :).

DO NOT GO THROUGH A AUTOMATIC CAR WASH. I have already broke one this way. Not with the water during the wash cycle. It's the heating cycle that can break it. As soon as that big dryer came near the hood, crack, the deflector was like 30 feets in front of the car, ouside the car wash. Luckyly, it did not damage my 95 Neon, and fortunately, the garage refunded me so I could buy a new one. Sometime there is a button for low pressure drying before you enter the car wash.

But why go there anyway? I mean I have a manual car wash near home - they charge 8$ exterior only. At the gas station it's like what: 6.50$? It's never doing a good job anyway.

My concern with the washing is more in the winter time. Here in the great white north (Toronto) they use quite a bit of salt on the roads, and most likely have to visit the wash every 2 weeks. But even removing the deflector everytime can become some what of a pain.

I had the 3M film put on. With in 2 weeks, I had these yellow stains that looked like they came from bug splats. Nothing I tried would take them off.

I took it back to the dealer and they said they would re-apply it, but I am concerned about it happening again.

Has anyone heard of this happening?

I looked up the product they applied to your car and if you look real close to the fine print it says this Quote

"LARGE CALGARY FLYING HORSE FLYS VOID WARRANTY AND MAY CAUSE YELLOW STAINS"

Sorry had to ding at that ........ (peep)

I have resorted to just waxing the MZ5 regularly. Then Washing a door at a time, and then the rest of the MZ5. Bugs will stick even to the clear plastic and you still have to wash them off. The paint underneat the plasctic guard maybe safe.. But at that time that the bug was stuck in the shield the car still looked bugged ladden.

Maybe not much help here but I've seen many around the web for the 2006 and 2007 models. Now, that said, to me the 06/07 hoods look exactly the same as the 08. The facelift changes are below the hood only (headlights, grill, bumper, etc, etc) so IMO find one for the 06/07 and then give them a call before buying to see if they accept returns, just in case.

Now, worst case scenario I use something like this when washing, it works great too and no need for the shield :D

Heya

Got the new Mazda Bug Deflector today. Only took 35 min to install. Looks fine. A highway test no vibs or noticible noise either.
Cost about 75 Bux Canadian.

Great look,by the way, what's the name of the paint job?

Are those the stock rims on your 5? If not, you got a pic of them?.

My 5 came with stock rims that look exactly like those covers, but it(vehicle) was imported directly from Japan.

P.S. Medicman appears to have a similar rim

Heres mine , black on black.

I have a white GT on order and want the bug shield for stone chips. The German dealerships over here can't even get them :(

I called a couple dealerships in Canada and they would ship to me but shipping combined with customs to the US was double what the bug shield cost. WTF!

Why do they offer it only in Japan and Canada?

I am looking to get a bug deflector for my 5 and was wondering if anyone else has tried this magnetic deflector and if so how do you like it?

Well it arrived today and it looks great. No need for pics cause it looks just like the website but here is one. I followed the directions to apply a hair dryer to get it to form around the corners. When it was done I armour alled it and wiped it with a terry cloth to remove the shine. My car is Carbon Grey so the black blends nicely. Well see how it goes when it gets hot. I am very pleased so far.

Yes, it's a very easy 20-30 minute install. It feels very sturdy and I don't see having any problems at all. It is different than the Canadian one as you can see but I think it will do it's job nicely and I think it looks very good as well. For $80 can't go wrong at all.

I'll take the bait... Dima-would you mind giving me an idea of cost of item and shipping via UPS or similar to US ZIP 21409? Unfortunately the one available in the US that Joey got does not cover enough hood based on the two chunks already out of my hood from road debris, so I'm hoping to find the slightly larger coverage one like yours and mothernature's.
Thanks in advance.

automatic car washes are for pussies :P

Up here in the Northeast and Canada, the only option to keeping dirt, sand and salt off your car during the Winter time is the car wash. With temperatures hovering around 32 degrees F (or 0 degrees Celsius), there is no way you will have your hose turned on or attached to a power washer to wash the car by hand.

I was wondering if our Canadian owners remove the deflector during the Winter snow season. Besides the car wash issues, a lot of snow and ice would accumulate under the deflector during normal driving.

In winter, as long as it is above freezing I go to a coin carwash to clean my car just make sure u wipe dry at least the glass before going out the bay so it would not freeze. completely dry it outside the bay.

I am in Canada and just got my bug shield broken by someone while parking on the street. The only part that I can find is EGR 337374 which is listed to fit the Mazda 3 and Mazda 5. Amazon has it listed for $37.99US but the picture is of a Toyota.

Does anyone know if the hood of the Mazda 3 is the same as the Mazda 5? Here is a picture of my broken bug shield it looks to be a pretty custom fit.
