Focus on mobility that conserves resources

For passenger vehicles in Europe, gasoline and diesel continue to be the standard fuels. But with rising prices for gasoline and diesel, alternative fuels are steadily gaining more attention. In addition to its engine management systems for gasoline and diesel engines, Bosch has developed systems for alternative fuels. They are laying the foundations for sustainable mobility.

· Flexible engine management systems for natural-gas or alcohol drive

· CNG lowers running costs and conserves the environment

· Alcohol-based fuel especially popular in Brazil

With the Bosch NG-Motronic flexible engine management system, cars can be run on either gasoline or compressed natural gas (CNG), and even switch between fuels along the way without interrupting the performance of the combustion engine. In Germany, for example, the very low tax on natural gas and an increasingly dense network of service stations offering the environmentally-friendly fuel mean that CNG is an option that makes more and more sense. Bosch has the appropriate engineering solutions for natural-gas drive, which produces about 25 percent less carbon dioxide (CO2) than gasoline, and no particle emissions. But CNG is not only attractive for the European market. The enormous interest in natural-gas drives in Asia, for example, offers great potential for development.

But natural gas is just one of the alternatives to gasoline and diesel available today. Particularly in Brazil, alcohol is also used for fuel alongside gasoline. With the Flex-Fuel engine management system developed by Bosch, vehicles can be powered by gasoline as well as alcohol. In Brazil, two types of fuel based on ethanol from sugar cane are commonly available: gasoline with a 22 percent alcohol content and alcohol with a 7 percent water content. Depending on the composition of the fuel currently in use, the management system automatically adjusts the ignition and injection. And with the tri-fuel system, Brazilian drivers can fill up with gasoline, alcohol, and natural gas.

With engine management systems for natural gas and alcohol-driven vehicles, Bosch is underlining its expertise in the development of modern and environmentally-friendly drives, which, as alternatives to gasoline and diesel, conserve resources and clear the way for the sustainable use of raw materials.

The Bosch Group is a leading global manufacturer of automotive and industrial technology, consumer goods, and building technology.
