Well,
Seems as if my car is beginning to fall apart, and its only 2 1\2 years old... Anyway, Occasionally, when I give it a little gas, it almost feels as if the gas is cutting out, and the car slightly jerks\bumps a bit, it only happens in first gear, when it is at either a dead stop, or just barely rolling, if I step on it, it doesnt do it, but if I barely press the gas, it seems to do it, it doesnt happen all the time, but does happen occasionally, and seems to be getting more and more frequent. Someone has told me they had the same issue with a totally different car, and it could be the universal joint, but I have no idea as I am not too mechanically inclined. I was wondering if I should replace the fuel filters first, not sure where to go from there. Before I take it in, Id like to get some thoughts from here.
Thanks again.
Pat
maybe check O2 sensor, spark plugs to make sure they aren't fouled, clean the EGR (search, there is a how to on the forum)

well my car was doing the same thing as your's
i took it tot he dealer to see what was happening with it. i have done everything possibly that i could think off to fix it and no progress.
well after the second time taking it the the dealer they found that the altanor was going bad. also that their was some melted wires inside the engine bay fuse box. thier was a couple fuse bad so u might wanna check that. after they fixed that the car ran better.
but no they can't figure out why the rpm's drop after taking the clutch out of gear.
i suggest u check all of this
o2's censor's
altanator
maf
fuel pump press
egr
Iac motor
coil pack's
see if your car is running too rich
i have done all these check's and progress a bit
good luck
and see if your

yeah, i have a system, the alternator could be crappin out, i know its a pos. Ill check the alt with a multimeter, see if its runnin constant, the plugs, I figured if the o2 sensor was bad the check engine light would come on, but i may check that too.
Thanks!

it sounds like the egr problem, wich is causing a misfire, sometimes,it is possible that the cel dosent come on,but it will, the misfire code is p0300,for random misfire, and the egr valve is p0401,but the egr code is a pending code,so you cant reach it with an obd2 reader, they only get it with the scanner at mazda...if you had a trouble with the alternator you should have a charge problem, its possible, cause the pcm needs constant 12 volts to work perfectly, and also, check the coils packs...
if it just happens in 1st gear when you're slowly moving (creeping up) and still having the car in the gear, and then pressing gas to go faster, you feel car jerk. Thats because your car is in 1st gear and at low RPM. That will happen no matter what.
Doesn't hurt to check other suggested things, but Im pretty sure nothing is wrong with them.

if you're in first off-throttle, you'll want to press the clutch for a second before going back on-throttle

stiffer motor mounts would reduce the jerking, though, if you really want to drive like that

Its my wifes car and its automatic, no clutch here for me.

well in that case, you should follow the suggestions and check things out. Might be the auto trans. itself (dont take my word for it) as Protege is known for shitty auto transmissions.

My car does a similar thing, on a manual transmission. If I'm in gear in 1st or 2nd around 1000 rpm, get off the throttle, and then press it again, rather lightly, it jerks back and forth maybe 5 or 6 times before smoothing out, unless I use the clutch and treat it like starting from a stop. It doesn't do it quite as much if I step hard on the throttle or extremely lightly.
I'd like to know about this as well...

out of my own curiosity, Ive been trying to locate a replacement EGR Valve on the internet for my 03 protege DX. I cant find ANYTHING. I havent been able to get to mine yet to check it out, but I'd like to know how much it'd cost to completely replace it.
Can anyone help me out with either a site to buy from, or an educated guess on the price of an EGR for my car?
Thanks a ton, again, you've all been so much help.

I doubt the EGR is very expensive, but why spend the money if you don't have too? I recommend just cleaning it. My car idled so much smoother after I cleaned mine out. It was so dirty, the valve could barely move(and that was at 29K miles). I also cleaned the throttle body, but it wasn't too dirty, just a little bit of grime around the flap.
