Hey folks, searched around but couldn't find an answer. I own a 2003 protege5 with a fubar 6-disc changer. Initially it was just plain stuck. Freakishly after two months it finally spit out the cds. Then I tried to use a cleaner. Got cds to play once or twice with rubbing noise but then the error message pops up and pops disc out...check disc.... but the CDs are in good condition. Any response would be helpful...I'm not a stereo junky so just getting it right would be fine by me....though I-pod stuff would be nice. Don't want to buy another head unit.

Hi and welcome to the boards! I have a 6 disk in my 2003.5 when mine gets any kind of error message i shoot some canned air in there and it works out pretty well (thumb)

No. Although the disc changer is a separate module (which could be replaced by the dealer under warranty btw), it cannot be used with an aftermarket radio.
Start by creating a WTB (want to buy) thread in the FS (for sale) section. There may be someone who has one lying around.
Otherwise, start looking into aftermarket head units. There are a few double-din units out there but most people end up using single-din units with an installation kit or single-din pocket.

Nope. Sometimes you can integrate factory external changers into an aftermarket system but not an in-dash unit like the one in the P5.
Well, anything is possible, but it would require an engineering degree and a shit-load of free time. You're better off just building a Carputer (http://www.mp3car.com)and loading all your discs onto a hard drive.
Besides, changers are cheap these days. Check eBay. I got a Clarion CeNet changer for about $60 to go with my Clarion head unit.

I have one I'm not using that also has the cassette module but has green lighting tho. Cassette door spring is missing somehow & the face isn't pristine but it's not bad, just didn't match how fresh looking my single player is. Could maybe mix & match using your face plate & lighting? Worth while? Just sittin in a box in the garage. Decided if I mess with the stereo, it'll be aftermarket. If anyone interested PM me & I'll take pictures & post in for sale section to be official. Hell, while I'm at it I may go crazy with it & post up all the extra protege parts layin around taking up space. Not sure what all there is, I'd have to do an inventory check.

The cd player module (whether it is single or 6-disc) comes off the unit by removing 4 bolts (2 on each side). If yellowstoneguy were to buy it off you, he could easily swap it into his existing unit.
