My 2000 Protege makes this loud whirring sound when I start it, especialy when it's cold and/or the A/C is on and/or the fan is on and/or I hit the brakes. I believe it's one of the belts but don't know which one. My mechanic says it's not a problem but the sound is really annoying. It only lasts for like 10- 15 secs and I have heard some cars have it too. Who knows what the problem is?
Thanks.
one of your accessory belts is loose. You have to tighten up either the bolt on the alternator or the bolt on the AC pump. The reason why you are hearing the SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK noise is because the belt is skipping.

Just make sure not to overtighten the accessory belts' bolt, wether its an alternator belt or A/C pump belt.
