View Full Version : Photoshop the Mazdaspeed3

Alright all you photoshop freaks... Let's show Mazda how much better their highly impressive (mechanically) MS3 would look with an equally impressive set of wheels. Personally, I think a set of black bbs wheels would look sick!
I was gonna post the pictures from the other 2 threads but what's the point?
Also... let's not stop at the wheels. Let's see what this badboy would look like in the various MS colors....

Well I went to Tirerack and, though I couldn't figure out how to insert a picture of the car below (with a new set of wheels) I obviously was able to see what this car would look like in orange. Mazda, if you're listening... and I know you are... make it in orange and I'll forget about the lack of awd and somewhat awkwar styling of the hatch. This looks pretty hot.
bear in mind... this is the regular 5 and not the MS version. I gotta believe that would look even better. after the snowflake wheels are tossed of course.

Hell F'in yeah!! That's what I'm talkin about! One of the best (if not the best) things about the MSP's appearance were the racing hart wheels. Even still, people compliment me on them and can hardly believe they're stock. For all the mistakes Mazda made with the MSP, it looks like they adaquetly addressed them with this new car. So why then are they falling short on the things that they actually did well on? ie. racey looks, aforementioned wheels, etc.? We all know Mazda reads these boards. If there's still time, we need to do our best to pursuade them to ditch those horrible wheels and go with something like the ones above. every car person knows.... wheels make the car.

ha it definitely makes that ugly hatch look much better.
they should def bring the MS colors, i betcha a yellow would look pretty hot too. And the wheels make a huge difference. If someone could chop the same pic with a set of black rims and a polished lip, that would look pretty hot.

Can anyone photoshop these with the rims being graphite colored, the headlights and tailights being smoked out (not completely black, but enough so its noticeable but can see the tail/headlights) (I am getting the 35% rockblocker overlays for the head/tail lights and fogs), tint the windows, and have the badges colored black? I am thinking of doing all of the above. Also, can you have two sets of photos, one with the side door moldings with all the above and one without the door moldings with all the above?

Dude! That's a tall order and a lot of work!
Think about it: 4 original pics (your choice, not theirs,) 5 requests and multiply that by a factor of 2 (w & w/o side molding?) Even if several things could be combined into one picture, you're talking about 20+ pictures.
That's why no one has honored your request. A professional ( I have one in the family) would charge you at least $200-300.00 for all that... Minimum!
I was going to try and tackle it myself until I really read what you were requesting and started to add it up.
BTW: Smoking headlights and taillights may be hazardous to your health... if you can get them lit, that is. (boom07)
Take it from someone who was dumb enough to try just exactly what you are proposing at one point in his life. YA' CAN'T SEE, Dude! And worse, no one will see you either.
Unless you have a daily driver and this is your "show" car, don't do it. It may look cool, but it's dangerous as hell... even more so today than when I tried it years ago.

Hey Chico! Buy "my" 3 for 30G and I'll even throw in the stubby antenna... free of charge! :)
BTW: I don't use PhotoShop. I have two different versions of it but find it to be very cumbersome and I can't get it to do what I want. I use a much older version of Adobe called PhotoDeluxe, though I too wish I could get the results that Mr.B does. (thumb)

Can anyone photoshop these...
OK. So call me a poor, dumb Schmuck for spending the last three hours working on these two copies of the same picture. (yawn) But that should give you some idea of the time and effort it takes to do this... AND of just what it is that you are asking people to do for you. It ain't magic, Dude... It's work!
If I were charging you the standard rate of $15/hr, plus supplies for good quality prints (these are web quality. Print QC= more time/more money) each one would cost you at least $40.00 ea... $80.00 for the pair. See how it adds up?
I took it upon myself to give you a "shorty" antenna and the red calipers and center caps, but that only took about a half hour. (I got carried away. ;) )
I also tried to fix some other anomolies in the original picture, but certainly not all of them.
If you right-click and save them to your desktop, then open both in Explorer you can get the full size pictures. Plus, if you put the two "windows" on top of one another you can click back and forth to get a quick view of what the car would look like w & w/o molding. Sort of an A-B comparison.
Also, I'd say that w/the overlay that I did on your windows (tint) is roughly equivalent to a 35% pass tint. (Legal, in all states, I believe.)
No applause necessary, just throw MONEY! (bowdown)

I am thinking of either painting the door handles the color of the rims or just taking off the covers altogether if I go with the graphite look, which is my choice as of now.
As for the chrome route, I dont want to spend $1000 on chrome rims for this car so that's out of the question.
I was actually trying to get a look of everything all together so I could see what it all looks like together in unison. I was also looking to get rid of that 2.3 badge if I took off the moldings but thanks for the effort anyway.
Are you sure that tint would be equivalent to a 35% tint job? The tint is so subtle in the pictures I didnt even notice it...

$200-300 for a photoshop job? You have to be kidding me. That is absolutely rediculous...
As for the smoking head and taillights, Rockblocker has confirmed that the lights work fine through the film and I have seen pictures of people with it on at night and it looks fine to me, so I am still going to go that route.
I really dont see how this could be hard at all for an avid photoshop user, let alone a "professional." I would attempt if I owned the program and knew how to use it but I dont. It appears to me for the moldings you would just take the color of the body and smear it over the moldings to cover them up? As for the rims, I have seen tons of photoshop jobs with different rims and no one mentions that they take a long time. The smoking headlights and taillights dont seem to be that hard either to a good PS user since dont you just adjust a layer of gray or some close color to what your looking for? I also think there is a tint option in PS so you could use that.
I figured a nice someone with a little extra time would be able to try and attempt (key word) this without asking for a donation.
So thank you for your time in doing it.

just taking a color sample and smearing it over the moldings would not work. every SINGLE pixel on the car is a very different color. you have to balance in shadows, light, and any reflection off the car to match the color. its much harder than you might think. and this stuff takes time. i sometimes do it for people but only when its late at night and im bored. i have way too much to do right now.

Thank you, MP3. You are absolutely correct. Then00b is thinking that this is a simple thing and the computer does all the work for you, but in fact it's an art form that requires a lot patience and practice.
My wife does geneology and I do the pictures and page spreads for her. Do you think I am a beginner at this? I do this stuff all the time. Taking old pictures, filling in what's been lost and correcting color, etc. Often these things are accomplished with a lot of imagination, trail and error and often one pixel at a time!!

No. And I wasn't suggesting it either. A mix of darker wheels and body chrome can be a nice look.

No. It's not an exact science, but they appear to be about the same as my front windows which are 35%
then00b:$200-300 for a photoshop job? You have to be kidding me. That is absolutely rediculous...
All I can say about that is what I have already said, it's time consuming and tedious. That cost money.
then00b:As for the smoking head and taillights, Rockblocker has confirmed that the lights work fine through the film and I have seen pictures of people with it on at night and it looks fine to me, so I am still going to go that route.
Your choice. (dunno) I would be trying to get my car to be more visible to others and better my own. As I'd said, I tried it... even came up with a lighter tint than was available commercially at the time, and it cut my headlight output. After days of spending my free time cutting lexan and getting it to fit just right, they came off in a hurry... but that was my choice. From your own admission you have never actually done it. If you had, you would understand.

then00b: As for the rims, I have seen tons of photoshop jobs with different rims and no one mentions that they take a long time.
"Seen" is the operative word here. The fact that no one has said anything to you about it does not mean they didn't spend hours drawing, erasing and redrawing... just as I had to do with your pics.
then00b:The smoking headlights and taillights dont seem to be that hard either to a good PS user since dont you just adjust a layer of gray or some close color to what your looking for? I also think there is a tint option in PS so you could use that.
No, not that hard... for someone who knows what they are doing. And if you want the whole photo to look grey it's even easier, but you don't. You only want selected little pieces of it. The computer doesn't know which pieces, so you have to tell it by drawing, and so forth and so on. Try it sometime.
then00b:I figured a nice someone with a little extra time would be able to try and attempt (key word) this without asking for a donation.
I don't recall asking for one, except in jest. If I had wanted one, rest assured I would've made a deal with you first... before I spent all that time on them.

That's 35% blocked, correct? If so I was approaching it from the other way around. e.g. 35 % light allowed to pass through, or 65/35.
This is what the police here in Texas "informed" me I had on my fronts after doing their little light meter test. So, I was going on that information.
Based on that, would you say that my estimate here is somewhat accurate?

Would the Pole-iece really hastle you if you went a little darker?
'Course in Maine it only stays hot for short time too, so the practical side of tint is somewhat lost there, I suppose?
Here, they stopped me because I have 95/5 ("Limo") behind the driver's compartment, but they didn't ticket me... yet. (thumb) So many people have dark tint here because the sun can be so intense that most of the time they just move on to bigger/better things I guess.

bbrich57, nice ass job.
Thank you. I would say "adequate to the task at hand" more than "nice-assed," but....
POSEIDON was right about one thing in particular, that RR door is not too good... even for a quicky! Hey! It was 3 AM when I did that. WhaddoUwant?
i have photoshop cs2 and i could not do that. i have alot to learn......... if you have any tips i am prone to learning. nice job once again as i know how long it takes
rob
Thanks again Rob.
You want advice from me? A ole' photo hacker who's... "not very good at photomanipulation," and "not the world's best photoshopper..." (OK. So that last one is a little out of context. 'Sorry CHICO!))
I hate PhotoShop and can never seem to get it to do what I want. I keep a copy around for converting progressive scan .jpegs to simpler ones my ole' program can open, and that's about it.
On the other hand, my step-daughter (the professional I spoke of earlier) is an expert and an artist, and she can make that sucka' sing. Beautiful work. Better than my best by far.
I use what is probably the earliest version of Adobe, PhotoDeluxe 1.0. Don't look for it cause chances are you won't find it. It's like... ten years old now. Parts of it won't even run on my newest machine, so I have to do a lot of things manually.
Listen Rob, this is already getting long. If you have questions that I might be able to answer, feel free to send me a PM or e-mail. I'll do my best, OK?
Nice car ya' got ther'. Black and shiny, and black and shiny. Whoa!
BTW: Thanks for the clarification of IMFAO. That was driving me NUTS!!

LMAO (didn't quite deserve the 'F') Dude... don't take my "not the world's best photshopper" comment personally. I'd have a better shot at landing an F-16 than trying to do anything with Photoshop. Your work was more than adequate. having said that, we've all seen some amazing work using this software. So good that you can't even tell it was altered.

then00b: I am thinking of either painting the door handles the color of the rims or just taking off the covers altogether if I go with the graphite look, which is my choice as of now.
You mean kinda' like this?
BTW: None of these are my best work, though, but should give you the idea you were looking for.

Hey all I said was you are very long winded for someone who isn't very good at photomanipulation. If you went "out of your way" for those, you might want to stop while you are still ahead. Take a breath ace.

No Chico, I didn't. Hey Dude, I'm still joking around w/U aren't I? Believe me, if I had taken your comments as anything but stand up, I wouldn't be joking.
CHICO: I'd have a better shot at landing an F-16...
I'd like to see that. :)

For me, that was a sleepless night and I started to feel like maybe I should help Then00b. By the time I got finished "playing around" I was pretty tired and certainly not at my best. I could've/should've put it on hold til I was better, but I wanted to get it out...
I just didn't realize that we had a critic on this thread. :(

Yes, I know. Now, you've said it twice. Two posts, three sentences, five insults.
If these comments were meant as compliments, then I'd suggest you study the "art of conversation."
Are we done here? 'Cause I'm done w/u, Man.
There. Is that short enough for you?
