View Full Version : P5 down, but hopefully not out

So, I was driving back from class and going around a corner I hit a standing "body" of water (a really thin river going across the road). I didn't even see it until afterwards when I was out of the car. Anyway, instead of getting off the gas and putting a bit of grip into my front tires I panicked and hit the brakes and smacked the curb doing abt 35 mph with my front right. I had the wheel turned so the wheel was abt paralell to the curb, and took the full brunt of the impact. So, that's one wheel fucked. After the front hit, the back swung around and slapped the curb, scraped the F out of the back wheel, I don't think it's bent tho.
You know how looking at the tires from the front generally look something like this:
| |
well, now it looks something like this:
\ | (actually, a bit worse).
I think I killed the strut, the end link sheared off of it. I'm sure I hurt a tie rod, may have hurt the sway bar, and possibly messed up a CV Axle. One wheel is destroyed. The passenger side side skirt came off, but it just broke the clips that hold it on, so that SHOULD just snap back on w/ some new clips. I hope. I don't have any pics, I'll take some tomorrow when I go to the dealership to go over the estimate to make sure they don't rape me TOO bad.
The one good thing is that I immediately called Mercer Police. Since I don't have collission, insurance won't cover it, so the officer was nice enough and just wrote a standard incident report rather than an accident report so it shouldn't get back to the insurance co.
Looks like she'll be out of commission for a while. I'll bring the cam w/ me tomorrow.

Bummer man :( Where were your autocross skills at? ;) Hopefully it isn't too bad. I'm sure there are tons of people here that can sell old stock parts too if you need. Or use it for an excuse to upgrade your struts and wheels!

I'm gonna have to foot the bill for the repair myself, so I'll have to see. I'm probably not going to be able to upgrade. Plus, that would send labor through the roof, cuz right now, only 1 corner needs work. And as for my autocross skills, I panicked. I've got no excuse. I knew what I should have done, but my feet didn't comply
EDIT: To bring a little levity:

LKQ's the best. they're an auto recycler but there stuff's not crap. they have a site but your better off just calling. too bad if you lived close to me i've got the major hook up with an LKQ near me i'd see what i could do. my buddy there got me both front seats for my p5 for 35 bucks delivered. i could probably get everything you need for pennies on the dollar. i'm gonna clean them out of those mp3 ecu's everyone's raving about. anyone interested???

Can anyone help me out w/ this situation, or let me know where to find the offset on a wheel? I can look tomorrow when I go down there, I wanna know if these are the right ones, cuz they're the exact type of wheel I've got, and I love em:

I was quoted about $2000 for parts from the stealership. I'm gonna save abt $500 going through a friend of a friend that works at a mazda dealership. He's only abt an hour from here, so no shipping.
Anyway, the moment we've all been waiting for. Pics:

they're pretty easy you can just pick them up at the dealer parts dept. you'll be looking to spend not even 20 bucks for both sides. don't bother going to a body shop you'll pay double. also here's my buddies info if anyone had a bit of bad luck and really need the hook up on OEM parts. just tell him where heard about him and he'll do his best.

damn dude!! i haven't been cruising the forums much lately and it's the first time i've seen this post. i did damn near the same thing to my p5 within two weeks of purchasing it. mine was snow related, and all the damage was mainly suspension related, but those pics bring back some sad memories. it was the day before christmas, too!! repairs were quoted at about 2500 and surprisingly took very little time to be completed. hopefully, your p5 won't take too long to get back on the road, too. good luck with the repairs!!

I'm in the same boat right now. About the same thing happened to me except for brake locked up on me. I hit my passanger side front first then the rear. I've replaced the control arm and the brake rotor which was cracked in half. I believe I still need struts and maybe a tierod. The Tierod does not seem bent but my wheels currently sit like this
l l
Plus it seems to be cambered out a little. It use to be cambered in. Would everyone agree just the strut or since it's still bent out it could be the tierod.
I'm affraid to drive it to a close body shop so they can look at it. Anyone in the Concord, NC area want to come take a look and give a second opinion?

good luck. The control arm WAS pretty mangled, I dunno if it was from direct impact w/ the wheel or from the rest of the suspension breaking. Either way, it sucked

on aim he suggested painting em black. I think the silver rim of the cap works w/ the silver lug nuts, and the black works w/ the tire. The 1's that came w/ the new wheels were actually all siver, those are the ones from my old wheels. I looked at them on the wheel side by side and made a command decision.
