I should start by saying I do not own a Protege, I'm just a mechanic for my buddy who does own one. We're changing the rear brake shoes/drums but have run into a snag getting the drums back on. The first problem we ran into was the ratcheting mechanism for the parking brake wasn't adjusted properly, so I set it as far in as I could get it to go. Then I took everything apart to make sure the new shoes are the same as the old shoes, which they are, and I also checked to make sure the E Brake wasn't set. I'm wondering if I somehow missed something during re-assembly that could lead to a problem, but I'm stumped. It just seems as though the new pads are just entirely too thick. Any help will be greatly appreciated, seeing as how we need to get this back together tonight.

I narrowed the problem down to the new shoes being the wrong part, they look identical, but they are about 1 cm longer on each end, making the lining stick out too far, hopefully the parts store he bought them from will take them back, considering the lining chipped on two of them while trying to get one of the drums on.
