</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>For 16 years, Mazda's MX-5 Miata has been the world's top-selling entry-level two-seat roadster. With more than 700,000 built, the Miata has knocked off British Leyland's venerable MGB, produced from 1962 to 1980, as the most popular roadster ever.

But the Pontiac Solstice is off to a strong start, and is far outpacing the newly redesigned Miata.

In January - the first month of full availability for the Solstice - the sleek Pontiac roadster nearly doubled the Miata in sales, 1,990 to 1,067. It was the same story in December, when the Solstice clobbered the Miata, 2,746 to 1,007.

To be sure, Miata sales in January were 106.8 percent ahead of the same month last year, when the previous model was on its last legs. But the new Miata isn't doing well in one critical area: consumers' willingness to pay more than sticker. Based on completed eBay auction sales, the highest price a 2006 Miata sold for was $21,900, but a Solstice brought $26,100. Including freight, the base Miata MX-5 stickers for $20,995, and the Solstice stickers for $20,490.

Pontiac officials are thrilled and a little surprised by the early results. Said Pontiac spokesman Jim Hopson: "The Miata is an extremely strong competitor, and we thought it was going to be a really good horse race."

I'd take the GXP Solstice over the Miata and over the Sky.

I'm gonna bet that, just like the fiero, once the solstice starts to get really good they'll kill it.

I think this says more about the type of people who buy Pontiacs. The miata is a sports car, not the flavor of the month popular car. It also speaks volumes about dealers. I never saw any of the new miatas with a rediculous markup. EVERY solstice I've seen has had a "market adjustment" added to the price.

God, I hate when dealers do that shit. Totally retarded and unnecessary, I mean the solstice is a nice car, and I figured they'd pull that BS, but it's no limited edition. By the end of it's production there will probably be 500,000 running around.

(It's not the cheapest entry level two seater when you add 10 grand to the price.)

It's just like when the new mustang came out, dealers were adding at least 5 grand to the sticker prices of the GTs. Give me a break it's a damn mustang. I see 20 everytime I drive to work!

That's why I'm stickin with my pro 5. It's a nice car, almost paid for, and didn't include any "market adjustment" that will bite you in the ass when you go to sell it with 10,000 grand in negative equity.

this is not news..... when the pt cruisers first hit the scene they were getting $4K over sticker...look at what tubs of junk they are.

The buzz will wear off like every new car and the miata will STILL be #1.

also, don't forget that Pontiac has a MUCH LARGER dealer network than Mazda

more dealers = more point of sale = more sales

according to current sales figures more people have confidence in buying a mazda product over a GM one. GM is in the crapper and I don't know anyone rushing out to get their hands on a pontiac.
