Mazda helping Ford develop subcompact for U.S.

With a rapidly increasing feeding frenzy at the shallow end of the U.S. automotive pool, Ford appears ready to take a dip into the market, with a little help from its Japanese arm, Mazda. Apparently, the Blue Oval has finally seen Fit (http://www.autoblog.com/2006/01/08/detroit-auto-show-honda-launches-the-fit/) to expand its sub-Focus offerings, green-lighting a new entry to mix it up with the Toyota Yaris (http://www.autoblog.com/2006/01/04/2007-toyota-yaris-the-little-euros-official-arrival/) and Chevrolet Aveo (http://www.autoblog.com/2005/12/20/2007-chevy-aveo-official-deets-and-pics/) in the burgeoning segment.

The Wall Street Journal has apparently quoted Mazda's chief executive and president, Hisakazu Imaki as saying that the Japanese automaker is working with Dearborn to create a platform that will accomodate the next-generation Fiesta for European markets, along with the Mazda2.

Don't start raiding those couch cushions just yet, readers... Imaki says it will be 'several years' before America's Ford dealers see such a car.
