IRVINE, Calif., Feb. 1 -- Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today reported sales of 18,177 vehicles in January -- a 7.0 percent increase versus the same period last year.

January sales were led in volume by continued strong sales of the MAZDA3, which reported sales of 6,109 units, accounting for a 16.0 percent increase versus last year. MAZDA5 continues to be a strong seller as it posted sales of 1,220 units while the MX-5 Miata posted sales of 1,067 units.

"Sales are off to a strong start in 2006 and with four new Mazda vehicles slated to be introduced this year, we expect our sales momentum to continue," said Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO of Mazda North American Operations. "With gasoline prices continuing to rise, we're proud of the fact that we offer stylish vehicles, such as the MAZDA3 and MAZDA5, that are fun-to-drive, focus on performance and handling yet are also fuel efficient."

What's not mentioned are the turbo vehicles which require Premium gas.

I feel that a turbocharged engine isn't really a great bet in the mainstream market. While luxury buyers like Volvo and Saab may be willing to pay the premium for gas, I don't think mainstream America will get past that. Sure it may offer better mileage than a V-6, but no ones gonna do the math to figure out what's cheaper.

CX-5? is that a typo? or a Tribute replacement?

"...introduced this year..." means released in 2006. Which means NOT the MazdaSpeed 6.

So, CX-7, CX-9, possibly MS3, and the other one I have no idea but thinking another MazdaSpeed vehicle such as the MS RX-8.

Cx-9?

Yeah, CX-9. While the CX-7 is replacing the Tribute, the CX-9 will replace the MPV and is a larger vehicle than the 7. Not much is known about the 9 yet, though it is supposed to come out this year.

i liked the MPV. I was hoping they'd bring over the one they just released in Japan. Maybe, it'll be the MPV rebadged as the CX-9. That way everything is alpha-numeric
