I wonder if the new key fob from the CX-7 would work with our cars.

The electronic portion MAYBE but I don't think the key portion could. I don't know though, good question!

it is the other way around - the key itself will work but the electronic control module is totally different and will not unlock doors

On a side note, I bought a factory fob and can't program it for anything. I tried the instructions on this site with the turn the key on 3 times. Push the door switch 3 times... The car never seems to go into learning mode. Any of you guys have similar experiences? Workarounds?

yeah. I want a fun remote. The key does look like the same specs as ours though, but I'm guessing on the CX-7 you don't use the key. must have an RFID push button start or something.

I never had a problem reprogramming mine, maybe you're not doing it quick enough or something.

That key for the CX-7 is also an option for the new 2006 MX-5 (and maybe the new Mazdaspeed 6 but we haven't received enough of them at the dealership to tell). It's a proximity key meaning that if the remote is within 3 feet of the car, it will start without the key. The MX-5 isn't a push-button start but there is a tab where you would normally insert the key into the steering column that you turn the same way you would a key, except there is no key. The removable key that comes out of the remote is just a backup in case the car battery goes dead or the remote battery goes dead.
I work at a Mazda dealership, maybe I can get pics of what I'm talking about, I doubt the above makes a lot of sense.
Anyway, I highly doubt it would work unless your car was originally designed for a proximity remote. Maybe I'm wrong and the wiring for the system is easy and can be replicated in any car. Not sure but it would be a whole hell of a lot of work just to be able to start your car without putting a key in (which can be achieved for cheaper by installing an aftermarket push-button start). The part would have to be purchased from Mazda anyway which means mucho $$$$$$.

The one I got has "For Mazda" on it along with the Flying M, which I thought was kinda lame, but I dig it and it's way smoother than the stock ones. I got the black one and had it cut at a grocery store for FREE!!! I came in and asked if they would cut it and they were all like whhaaaa???? (boom07) We don't usually do that, I'll have to call my supervisor....but they did it anyway, I bought another spare just to be a nice guy like $3.00 and both work just fine... (thumb) .

yeah when i went in to have them cut (had one for the mp3 too) the guy was sort of confused cuz he wasn'e sure how to charge me. so i just told him to charge me for the cheapo blank and he could keep it. i went to a professional locksmith though since i didn't want them to f up the $20 key. i spent 4 years working for walmart. i know how often those keys dont work. hell.....once when there was no one to work autootive they stuck me there and had me make keys without any training. fucked up everyone of them. oh well.

i was kinda refering to the price. y so expensive when dealership is cheaperThe dealer price cheaper because it's for the Protege-style keys (Ken was quoting for a 3-style). I haven't priced a 3-style key from the dealer lately but last time I did, it definitely wasn't $13.
Having at some point carried around keyrings with both Protege and 3 keys, I can definitely say I prefer the Protege one. The 3 keys are just too big for me.

i'm totally confused. could anyone sum up which other key might fit the 98-03 BJs (3rd gen). a butterfly/switchblade key would be something i'd fancy. no probs with the immobiliser ?
This key works: http://www.msprotege.com/members/Captain%20KRM%20P5/key%20gb.JPG
Did your BJ come with an immobilizer? The Protege5s in North America didn't, so the chip in that Mazda3 key (the one I just linked to a pic of) just doesn't do anything for us.

yes, we have immobilisers, required by law for new vehicles since 1998 :ß makes the whole thing seem very difficult :(
on the other hand.. every BJ owner has a 4 digit number for his keypair (prolly for the RFID chip for the immobiliser?), i wonder what would happen if i ordered a Mazda3 remote and gave them this number to put the code in the key :-)

ok some small update: i investigated a bit and getting a switchblade key does not seem a problem anymore and the immobiliser chip can be transfered to the new key as well.
the "real" problem is to utilise the new remote control senders in the switchblade keyfob.
i had some email exchange with the manufacturer of aftermarket keyfobs and they do deliver a blackbox along with the aftermarket fobs that must be installed to the car's original central locking system. this sucks because then the original mazda keyfob wouldn't work anymore (which i think would be cool as a backup) :((
if there was some nice aftermarket fob that could be taught/adapted to the systems frequencies would be the coolest thing, but it seems there are too many different frequencies and sending patterns :(

Is the pic shown above a mazda3 key? Sorry to bump this old thread, was looking for a new key for my 02 P5.
Also, if I get the nice blue ones shown in this thread, it has to be WITHOUT Grooves, correct?

Yes, I believe the black plastic with chrome logo is a 3 key. The protege one is just black with no chrome. Yes, you need the ebay key without the groove.
