I'm about to buy my first car and a 2001 protege is my first choice right now, however, I know very little about Mazda's. It only has 78,000 km and appears to be in excellent condition. It has a sun roof, cd player, and air conditionning. The asking price it about 300 canadian dollars a month for 36 months. I have found some new cars in the area that i could lease for 230 or so, but then there is that huge buy out price at the end....so does this sound like a good deal or not. Also, are there any problems associated with protege's, i should also mention that it is an automatic?

If you do not plan on modding the car this is a good car. But if you want some thing to play with and be fast this is not a car for you. But I will say I Love my little car. I've mostly been a V8 guy but this little car handles great looks good good MPG and with a few mods is quick enough to make driving around town fun. If the car you are looking at is an AUTO then I really say don't do it. The auto just don't have the torq. IMO

Yeah Id test drive it first and see if the auto would make me happy. Knowing that 4 cyl cars with auto are more often then not very sluggish Id say stay away from it but it might suit your perfectly so do what feels right for you.
Good luck

Yep, manual is where it's at. With auto I would test drive it first with the A/C running and see how it feels. And if you do buy the protege, you will get the most out of this car if you enjoy taking curves and not how fast you can go on the highway.
