pinging heatshield

Shortly after i got my car, i took the heatshield off to polish it up... ever since i've put it back on, when the car cools down, it lets out random resounding 'PING's... now, i understand cars make noise as they cool down, but it never made this noise before, and sometimes it can be just stupid loud. Its driving me nuts. I've tried loosening all the bolts at once and retightening one at a time when its hot, and likewise when its cold, and that doesn't seem to make any difference. Anyone know any way to fix this problem??

u probably didn't hear it before because u never listened or maybe the dirt and grime caused the sound to dampen and now that u have a "shiny quarter" heatshield it makes the "dinging" sound

You sure its coming from the exhaust manifold heatshield? I polished mine and do not have that effect. Have you tried taking off and driving the car to see if it still pings? Strange situation you have there if its actually the shield.

It might've been there, but it definitely wasn't as loud... at one point when i pulled into the garage at night my dad came out and asked what that noise was, he was in the house watching TV and heard it.

Thats a good idea about driving with it off, i'm pretty sure its the heatsheild, but i'll try that, so i can be sure.

i just got an new oem exhaust and it makes that sound a good audible level. i know my stock one before didnt make it. ....somehow related?
