So we've owned our Mazda5 for over a month now, and I finally saw, not just one, but two Mazda5's on the road this weekend in Leesburg, VA.

On Saturday, I saw a strato blue Mazda5 heading North on Rt 15 and then on Sunday I saw a stellar greensilver Mazda5 heading down Sycolin.

Leesburg is not a big town, so I was surprised to see two other Mazda5 running around town. But good to know that others have figured what a cool car it is. :)

Finally saw ONE other - a greensilver a couple weeks ago in the parking lot near my drycleaners. Then, I was at the dealership getting an oil change on Friday and there was a greensilver there too. Talked to the owner and found out that it was one and the same!! This one was owned by a grandma and she was talking about it to everyone that she bumped into!!! (Hence, it was easy to track down its owner)

I saw 2 in as many minutes just a few days before I got mine. First was a black one turning left down the street I was on, then a greensilver one parked just a few blocks down the road. Hadn't seen any before and I haven't seen any since. Here's hoping though...

So far I've seen 3 in Omaha.
They were all parked. One was at Hooters, one was at a house (in Bellevue just off 36th & Harrison), and one was at an apartment complex (the Stockyard Exchange Building).

I haven't seen any driving around yet

I haven't seen one on this side of town (Folsom). Pretty nice to be the only one with the 5 around here. You get a lot of looks and questions like "what kinda car is that? Is that a van?".

We are the only one in our area. We bought it from Austin, and our local dealership cant get the recall fixed on theirs. They have one on the lot thats been fixed, and it isnt moving.

Man, I really hope the recall and the lack of promotion from Mazda haven't conspired to make the 5 a real sales flop. I want to be seeing a lot more of them on the road!

Wuster

I think some of it has to do with supply.

When we went to buy our Mazda5 around Thanksgiving, there were only four touring in the western Washington, DC area with Navi amongst six dealerships.

I'm not sure how many new Mazda5's have made it from Japan since the recall was completed.

Besides, I've beening hearing people recommending them. This past weekend on NPR, Click & Clack recommend the Mazda5 to a lady looking to buy a wagon to haul her harp.

So, it's getting some free postive exposure.

I have seen a couple around, not very many. Apparently they are all on order up here in Vancouver, if you want one you have to get on the list. When they arrive, they are immediately sold.

Also in Vancouver, however in downtown area, I see the same 5 Mazda5s around regularly.

1 silver no tint
1 silver with tint
1 black with company graphics
1 green
1 blue

That plus ours makes six. Still don't think I have seen yours around Perfecto! The dealership we had orginally been waiting on phoned and I guess the are finally trickling in to the dealerships here, so there are more on the road every day.

It has been a little over a month now since i got my 5 and I finally spotted one on the road. A silver one, It was actually nice to see one rollin' down the road. now i know how mine looks like from someone else's view. I'm surprised by the low turnout of the 5 here in northern cali... i drive back and forth from folsom to sacramento a lot and this was the first time i've seen one.

Saw a Greensilver Met. one a couple of days ago. That's only the third time I've seen one ever, and the first time since I bought mine. But I have a feeling it's the same one I saw just before I picked mine up, so that probably makes only two others in town. I kind of enjoyed the exclusivity at first, but this is too much. If I was still living in a city of 30K people then I could understand it, but not in here in Colorado Springs. Is Mazda just testing the waters to see if the MZ5 fits into a viable North American market segment or what?

I hear ya, and I agree. I have yet so see any advertisement of the 5, I've heard of a couple of magazine ads, but no TV. It's like they are ashamed of the 5 or something. I'm beginning to wonder if I will ever see the 5 on TV. I would think if the commercials started flowing, more people would buy...but what do I know.

Charles J P
02-09-2006, 01:48 PM
Are people worried that they are going to drop the model? How bad would that suck that we all get stuck with a single model year car? Or does that just not happen due to sunk costs in R&D etc.

geezerz99
02-09-2006, 03:49 PM
Even if Mazda drops this model, or even if this will be the only year they will sell the mazda5... that will be fine with me. It's not like we're stuck with an ugly ass vehicle. The only drawback i think is the lack of aftermarket parts that will be available.

And it's not like the mazda5 hasn't been around anywhere else. It sold pretty well in europe and asia, just cause it didn't sell well in the US it doesn't mean it's not a good quality vehicle. I just think it's good you don't see it everywhere... it's unique, people tend to admire it more coz they don't see a lot of it.

the_saint
02-09-2006, 04:07 PM
I don't think they'll drop the car. I just don't think they're pushing it in the NA market. These things are suppoosed to be selling like hotcakes in Europe and they are also pretty popular in Japan as well.

My personal opinion is that the MazdaUSA people aren't sure if the 5 will go over well in the States due to the American love affair with "bigger=better"...just look at all the SUVs.

pbdave
02-09-2006, 06:57 PM
to my knowledge they are not going to be "pushing" it until stock levels & manufacturing have returned to normal. In Canada, the wait time is still quoted at 5 months at most dealerships - there are lineups for this vehicle everywhere. Why spend $$ running ads when it is already outselling production?

ps - why on earth would they drop it? it is A) getting good press and B) selling like crazy. Kind of a strange conclusion to arrive at simply because you haven't seen any driving around.

(eyeballs)

Charles J P
02-09-2006, 07:07 PM
Yeah, I wasn't trying to push that point of view, I picked up that they weren't manufacturing at all or at full capacity right now and misinterpreted the reasons.

I vaguely recall seeing a TV ad on here in Canada at around the time the recall was anounced. It must have been yanked pretty quickly. I think it also featured the Mazda3??? I only saw it twice before it disappeared. I thought they'd be hyping it much more post-recall, but I think you're right, pbdave, Saint: Why advertise when there's a 5mo. waiting list?!

nexs666
02-10-2006, 02:07 PM
I'm sorry to hear about the long wait up North, although it is encouraging to know that they are selling well somewhere. But I'm seeing them sitting on the lots at both local Mazda dealers here. I've even seen that dealer's ads on TV and they were pushing every model they had except the 5. I simply can't imagine that more people in the US wouldn't find this to be an ideal family vehicle given fuel costs, traffic congestion, lack of giant-sized parking spaces, etc. But, yeah, you are right, saint. Most people in the States still haven't been able to realize that their suburban assault vehicles are way more than they really need. Maybe some day...

02-10-2006, 02:54 PM
The dealership where Saint got his and I'm going tomorrow to test drive again with the wife this time told me they have sold 15 total. They have about 6-8 on the lot right now, even split between sport and touring and a mix of auto/manual.

I just spotted a Carbon Gray, Sport, Auto in Omaha... in my garage. I also noticed that there is already a small chip in the trim around the radio and have had poor luck getting dealers to do anything about minor cosmetic flaws in the past. Does anyone have any ideas on how to touch it up?

Ha, ha, ha,

So far, I've only seen three other Mazda5's on the road and only one close enough to wave at. But I think we (both drivers) was so surprised to see another 5, we just stared at each other as we drove past each other in the parking lot.

Back in November or so I saw a white pearly parked at a TigerDirect store (driver in store). There was an open spot right beside him so I parked my pearly white right beside him too and I also went into the store.

Too bad I missed the driver as half-hour later, the car was gone. I would have liked to see the look on their face!!

In a similar scenario, I drove into a plaza where a phantom blue was parked and I parked right beside them. Again, I didn't get a chance to see the other driver's reaction when they left.

Next time you guys park somewhere and a white pearl pulls up beside you... be forewarned.... it could be ME

The touring and sport have different rear "spoilers". The spoiler on the GT is longer than the GS. Also the GT has 5 spoke wheels where the GS has 10 spoke wheels

I think sales must finally be moving around here. I've seen three in the last week, after one in 2.5 months. White and red driving and silver parked. The red one saw me too and flashed it's lights at us and waved... I waved back :). That's the first red one I've seen IRL, I kinda liked the color.

Actually, I saw the white and red both right near my house (Parkerish) and the silver over on University and Dry Creek.

I'm pretty sure that you aren't a dumpy, 50ish woman (unless you have an online alter-ego), so I don't think it was you ;)

No, but I wouldn't mind seducing a woman 20 years my senior. You know, just once.

So I guess it wasn't me. I'm up north. And I only drive it once a week to fill up the tank.

I have only seen one so far and that was during the test drive. I'm up in Fairfield, so you might catch a sighting of me when I'm down visiting the woodworking store over off of Contra-Costa Blvd.

I'd consider helping you out, but I'm about 10 years to young for you (shocked)

Burt had two of those tealish ones on the lot when we bought. They don't have any left, which means they sold those two, plus the three other (two blacks and another grey) that they had on the lot a month after we got ours.

Just got back from Orlando - we didn't drive, we flew, but we kept seeing mazda5's EVERYWHERE!! I guess hertz down there rents them out. (along w/ H2's, mustang converts, etc) It was so nice to see them around. My brother from Jacksonville joined us in their silver mazda5. Great vacation overall.

Saw one today just south of I30 going south on I35E. It was the indigo blue sport model. Some young guy listening to his Ipod. He didn't notice me until we passed, then he jumped in behind and started trucking along with me until I had to exit 67 south to Duncanville.

Saw two today. One was a bare bones auto red sport. I think it may have been a rental, it just didn't look lived in and I've never seen one that bare bones on a lot around here. But maybe it was just new, the tags were from last month. So, anyone lurking that was at the FireBowl Cafe in Centennial, CO today for lunch?

I also saw a stellar green one pass me at an intersection today. I've never seen two in one day before and I've seen more white than anything else until now. Speaking of which, the red is an interesting color (I hadn't seen it close up before) - I had heard that it skewed pink, but I thought it looked orange. If fact when I caught it's reflection in a window I thought it was the metallic orange speed6 I had seen on my way into the parking lot. I kind of liked it.

So did anyone see me?

Mount St. Helen's July 9th.

Didn't think so.

Our whole trip from Victoria, BC to Seattle to Mount St Helen's and back (Friday morning to Sunday night) we only saw 1 Mazda5 (not including our own of course) and it was a Platinum Silver just as we were passing through Surrey on the way to the Ferry - and it had Washington tags. Not a single 5 in Washington - the one I finally saw was in BC. Just crazy! I thought it might have been Perfecto (no tint) but with the Washington tags... no go.

Anyway, the car performed great, we put more than 1200km (750mi). Picture is from one of the lookouts on the way to Mount St Helen's.

I saw my second Mazda5. We were at the Delaware shore last week and a Whitewater Pearl 5 blew past me on Route 1 without a wave or anything. I moved into its lane and started to acclerate to catch up with it when my husband asked me if I was crazy. Oh well....

It was a great trip, but we came back with a nick in the paint - probably from all the wind and swirling debris from Tropical Storm Ernesto.

In Montreal there are full of them. Just on my street we are 2 GT owners.

Me = black
Neibghor = dark gray

In my immediate neighboorhood, I think I've seen 3 more (shocked).

I work like close to cityway 40 and on it's service way I see tons of them. That is probably since beginning of july though. Before that they were scarce.

When I went to find a replacement for my Jetta the dealer had 3 in stock, including a black - lucky me! There were 2 indigo blue and one plat silver, my first choice, but he wasn't sure if he could get it. So I went with the black.

But of course I think people in QC are proven mazda lovers (first) . We bought lots of proteges and now lots of 3s.

There is another Mazda5 that lives two streets from us. Beyond that, they seem to be pretty scarce around Baltimore. I think we've seen two others in the four months we've owned our 5. Our dealer says they only service three others.

Over the summer, we drove from Maryland to Mississippi, via Nashville on the way down and through Atlanta and Raleigh on the way back. We saw zero 5s. This past weekend we drove from Maryland to Boston and back. Again, we saw zero 5s.

Maybe we're all just seeing each other?

Well, I saw another one today while stuck in traffic. A cardinal red, one I hadn't seen around Baltimore before. Looked like it had been recently registered, something that one can tell by the license plate number. I also thought about honking and waving, but I was driving the Protege. Oh well...

Hey Jandree22, you are right. Does the Valley Forge or Phoenixville Areas sound familiar to you? I usually say that I'm from the Northeast US as is easier to mull, but yes, I'm proud to say that PA is home for me as well.

I yet need to see more of the State but so far I like it (bowdown). It is nice plus close to every major city and fun places, like Ocean City. By the way, How do you like Harrisburg?

Oh, I almost forget, for the benefit of the thread, during a trip to Fort Worth TX I also stopped by to see a dealer with a 2007 WhitePearl Mazda5 Grand Touring. Those sweet leather seats, HIDs and blackened headlights and tailights... Oh dear, if I had more money (band2)

I had never even heard of the Mazda 5 until my son suggested I look at a Mazda (He has had an MX-6 and a Mazda 6). We were looking at the Honda Fit and the Nissan Versa for my wife. She sat in the 5 and that was that. Much more comfortable, lots of room, more power, more standard features. So we sacrificed a little on gas mileage. I can't believe I never even heard of one before. I have not yet seen another one on the road here in SouthEast NC. I'll keep looking.
