View Full Version : How long will the P5 community remain strong?

I was thinking about this in the shower today. Now that the P5 has been discontinued, there are a lot less new people coming to the P5 community. Also, the aftermarket for the P5 has never been that strong (compared to Civic, Eclipse, WRX, etc...) so I wonder how much longer people will continue to make parts for it.

I plan on keeping my car for as long as possible, as a lightly modded daily driver. I will be picking up a new car, something comparable to an S2000, when I graduate law school, but I want to be able to keep modding my P5 for as long as I own it.

I bought my Protege5 for a daily driver, nothing more. My "speed demon" is my talon...though its only up 1 week out of the 4 per month.

I think people will always be joining. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if this communuty grows even more. Don't forget, the oldest ones are only just four model years old, and as they get traded, they will be more affordable for a lot of younger guys (and girls) who will want to mod them.
The second gen Proteges were never a big seller, so you can't really look there and see into the future, but the P5 and 3rd gen sedans sold pretty well. There are a lot of potential modders out there.

I usually think about women or world domination. Or both.

Same here. Needed a commuter more than a race car. Although the P5 is my only car. I'm not the type to put whole paychecks into a car.

I think that the P5 and sedan have made the point that there are more cars than hondas to mod . There will always be parts around be new or used . As parts wear out you have to replace them ,that were the aftermarket comes in as Mazda stock parts are to expensive .

The P5 is somewhat of a rare car due to it's volume of production. I agree, the used car industry will keep the P5 alive. Will it expand in vas numbers like an Acura RSX, of course not, but we'll keep the P5 alive. (Oh, that's bad)

Yeah I have to agree w/ the people who say it will grow. Mine is now four model years old and I still love to drive this car. Out of my 3 street legal cars this is the one I like to drive on a daily basis and even though it's not as modded as my crx or my talon tsi I still love it.

Even as a used purchase I think it's a very popular choice...It will always look and feel different (read: more special) than other JP makes of the same type. Also...the aftermarket may actually grow and mature as the P5 will be super affordable for a variety of uses...fun daily driver, weekend auto-x, active lifestyle ride, custom cruiser etc etc...plus with high gas prices...The more I think about it...the more I realize the P5 community "ain't goin nowhere!"

PS...If you notice the P5 forum has over 150k posts and is one of our most active model forums!

Agreed. Anyone notice how long these things sit on dealership lots (aka used)? Not long. *sigh* she's my baby! My daily, and a pretty darn good auto-x car (compared to other cars I've owned...).

She's a lady on the street (sometimes), but a freak in the bed (er...auto-x course?)

The Pro5 my not be the car in the lot that everyone recognizes, but thats what makes it great. None of my friends knew it even existed until I got it. The thing that will keep it alive is people like us who love it.

Thinking about this in the shower really isn't that wierd to me. I usually think about things like how can I unlock the secret that is the female, or how can I get money quicker without working.

The mazda dealer I go to had one when I was there on wednesday. Silver 2003, 5dp with 56k. I'm going back over today I'll see if it's still there. They may have a vivid yellow 2002.5 on the lot also this week.

When I bought my P5, I orginally looked at a 2003 yellow auto (34k miles I believe) at a local mazda dealer. The day before I looked at it, it had sold. It spent only a week and a half on the lot. I also looked at another one, but it was a 2002 blue with 35k miles with no options, and overpriced by about 3k. Family members had a bad experience with them once, so it was a no-go. I believe it is still there. The one I bought had been on the lot for a little while, since they hadn't advertised it much, and so I bought it for a great deal at the end of the year.

As a new member to the P5 community, I will help to bolster your numbers! Anyways, if everything goes according to plan, in about four years I'l get a new daily driver, and plop a turbo/supercharger in my P5, do an auto to manual switch, and have a little fun on the weekends!

I don't really care if the aftermarket companies stop making parts for the P5. I just love her, I will never leave her if possible.

In my best smalls voice "For Ev Er". I think the p5 community will go on for a while. And for the past few months I have been seeing alot of new people registering on the forum. I Like how alot of people give me compliments on my car and say it looks good, and how they didn't think a wagon could look so good.

Actually my talon is rock solid car when it comes to reliability, never had it let me sit yet. I can drive it thru the snow, take it to the track and run 12.80's and drive it home.

I've never owned a car as long as I've owned my P5 - and I don't expect to see her go anytime soon. In fact, I'm keeping my eyes open for an older Mazda to use as a winter beater and save the beast for summer only, that's how much I love her! :)

i dont think the market is going away anytime soon. most p5 drivers are very satisfied with there car ok maybe not power wise all the time but definatly comfort, look, handling etc. i plan on keeping them both for a long time

Not sure. The P5 is the descendant of the 323. The 323 is a niche car that a small group of people love. I think it was much bigger in Europe.

I think the P5 has already peaked in popularity and will continue to be a qwerky cult car. There's nothing wrong with that by any means. It'l be like a Dodge Shelby, Probe/MX-6, MX-3, Dodge Omni, Starion....something like that.
