So I purchased a Perrin SRI which many of you know is a piece of trash and really difficult to install. In the end, we decided not to install it and got creative (something many of you have done I see now) and just removed the stock air box, connected the MAF to the intake tube and put the Perrin filter on the end of that making a "stock" short ram intake. For now, in the winter, this is okay and the car is running great, but come summer, I'll have some heat issues. I wanted to purchase some sort of 45 degree tube that will extend into he corner of the engine bay and put a K&N air filter on the end and return the Perrin filter with the rest of the trash set-up. Where can I get a tube like this? I've seen some of you guys with one, but I don't know where to get it. And, how can I get the correct K&N filter to fit this set up? I tried having some local autoparts stores help me today but they were no help and clearly don't know anything unless they can look it up on their computers (which don't even pull up mazdaspeed proteges). Help me out!
How do you conclude the Perrin SRI is trash before you even install it? I'll take it off your hands if you don't want it...
Anyways, what you're doing isn't really gonna help performance, if that's what you're looking for. If you're looking for sound then it'll definitely work. You'll need a 2.75" pipe and you can get it here (http://www.stikiller.com/product.php?productid=16499&cat=310&page=1). You'll have to do some cutting to make it fit, though (and a matching silicone coupler). As for the K&N, just get one with a 2.75" ID flange - search on knfilters.com for the part #.

Thanks for the help. Some questions for you: Why do you say that it won't help performance? Is it because of the hot air I may suck in? I'm going to have my buddy make a heat shield for that purpose. I've seen a number of other guys do this same thing with their intake and get good performance results. What I've done for the time being sounds amazing. The turbo screams (audibly that is) and the turkey doesn't sound so bad either.
Where can I get the silicone coupler? And what do you mean by it being necessary to do some cutting to make it fit? I ordered a 3" OBX filter today to replace the Perrin filter. That small diameter difference shouldn't matter with a hose clamp.
I concluded that the Perrin was a piece of trash after buying it and realizing that one, they don't provide you with all the necessary parts for installation and two, if you do a search, the Perrin design was screwed up by someone in the shop. Look for some posts by rocketspeed. IF however you are running a dual set up, the Perrin is a great intake even though the design is screwed up (the nipple for the bpv was installed incorrectly).
If you want this intake, I'll ship it to you for $130. Let me know!

By the way, we have the exact same car. Pretty rad...I think its the best color with tinted windows. Mine are tinted with a mirror finish on them along with the windshield.
I say it won't help performance because you're only replacing the stock air box and not the restrictive piping all the way from the MAF to the turbo inlet. Not that you'll get much from a real intake, anyways, but here I don't think you'll gain anything. You won't lose anything either (if you put the heat shield on) so it's your choice.
You can get a silicone coupler from that site. You'll probably need to do cutting because I think the piping is pretty long so it might not fit. I dunno about the filter.
They don't provide you with all the necessary parts? That's weird... Are you totally sure about that? And I did read about rocketspeed's problem, but I was under the impression that they have that problem fixed now.

Nope the problem is not fixed yet. They never produced a new product and I just ordered my Perrin intake two weeks ago and its the same design. Now, after you insert the plastic elbow which is provided with the kit and cut off the nipple for the bpv, the stalling issues are mostly eliminated he said. It was only under really harsh driving that it was stalling for him. But with the lengthy installation (you have to remove a lot of stuff to install it) and the trips to the auto store to get the right parts that were not included with the kit, I just said forget it. Believe it or not though, I do feel significant gains from removing the stock air box. That little bit of restriction did make a difference. You should try it yourself. Its a ten minute swap to remove the stock air box and put a cone filter in there. I need to drill a hole to put the cold air sensor back in though. Right now its just hangin and suprisingly has not thrown any check engine light or shorted me or fuel. But thats only because its winter time. You're still welcome to buy it! Otherwise, I'm sending it back as soon as the new filter comes in.
What size silicone adapter do I need? 2.75" or bigger to fit around the pipe??

there's a post on the thread about this whole deal, it turned into a massive flame war. A guy did this, and it turned into a debate between if k&n was any good and all of this intake crap...made for a good entertaining read haha..i'll try to search for it.
I did replace the stock box with piping that rerouted it to the wheel well, but I really didn't feel much difference... I believe you are experiencing the placebo effect. The stock airbox isn't very restrictive at all, especially compared to the 5 foot rollercoaster of piping behind it. I put the stock box back... Didn't feel like deluding myself. =P
Yeah, 2.75" for the 2.75" piping.
What parts were not included with the intake? From what I recall about the Perrin there're just a few clamps and some hosing.

Yeah, I'll give you that one. It may be the placebo affect. Whether it is or isn't, I think it sounds sweet so I think I will finish the job.
Alright, well I'm going to take your word on the piping and order it now. Thanks for the info. If you're wrong, we'll see what kind of ninja you really are... (glare)
And you are correct, it was missing a hose or two and some clamps. But after my buddy was working on my car doing a few other things last night and then ran up against the Perrin problems with the lack of hoses, I just said forget it when it was 10pm already and he was doing it as a favor for me while I was at work. Again, take it off my hands if you want it. Its always easier to re-sell to someone than return. I'd get my money fast that way too rather than waiting for them to reimburse my credit card three weeks later!
Nah, I don't think I'll take it from you. I'm cheap and I'm scavenging for some kind of cheap used one instead.
Good luck with your project, anyways. Yeah, I did indeed like the sound, but I felt like a little ricer. =P

Ricers only wish they had boost! (hah)
And $130 shipped is CHEAP for an intake! If you change your mind, shoot me an email. I'll have this laying around for another week or so. How much are you looking to spend anyway?

I'm looking to spend $70. (glare) I've actually gotten a few people willing to sell to me for that price, except they've all somehow been too busy to finish up. But the main reason is because if I were to do it DIY it'd cost around $55, but I'm lazy so I'm willing to spend $15 more for convenience, but not more.

Whatever you say man....well good luck and shout at me if you change your mind! Thanks for the help. My parts have been ordered.

pretty sure any open element cone filter is better for spool time then the stock box, if it runs ok in the summer with a heatshield then it doesnt sound like a bad setup.

alright i couldn't let this go on without saying anything.... anyone with any sense knows that CAI's and SRI's don't really help with performance with a bone stock car, basically what needs to be said here is that without other mods an intake isn't gonna do anything except change sound. if you want an intake that is out of the heat of the engine bay then man up, and spend a little money on your car and go buy an AEM or an Injen CAI but don't expect anything great. i am not against custom anything because, well it can be better in some applications. but, one characteristic of a "RICER" is someone who won't spend a little extra money for something that is garanteed to work and in the long run provide decent performance. granted, i am not wealthy, but when it comes to my MSP, i don't mind spending a little extra money. thats just my .02.... not trying to make anyone cry.... i love you all

I'm aint cryin. I'm getting married soon and can't afford nor do I want to piss the fiance off spending lots of money on mods. So, I've done a few cheap, modest cosmetic things to my msp and wanted a little sound out of my car hoping for some performance too. I don't know if I got the performance, but I like the sound. If that makes me a ricer, than so be it. I'm just glad I'm not a ricer driving a beat up nasty civic. But just for the sake of debate, I would think that removing the stock air box (which must add some restriction) has got to get you a few more ponies (maybe 1 or 2).
Man, and another reason I'm not spending money on my msp is because I do NOT have the time to be constantly tweaking my car and dealing with all the mazdaspeed quirks that come out when you mod the car heavily. That's been one thing that has turned me off of spending a lot of money too. The msp just is not a very reliable and consistent car when you mod it up. Fun, but time consuming and often unreliable.

whoa man i ain't callin anyone on this forum a ricer, all i'm saying is that IMO i would rather spend some money if it makes more sense than custom. and believe me i know where you are coming from, i am way short on money too, engaged and in school, so you do what you do i was just telling my opinion

Thats cool man. I wasn't offended and I hope I didn't sound that way. I understand what you're saying, just don't have the available funds and unfortunately aren't going to for a few years and then it may just be time for a new car. So....I'll just have to enjoy my basically stock msp. But that's cool I guess.

The MSP may not be a top fuel drag car but it sure as hell corners with the best of em. thats something that is beyond some 5.0 mustang. when i race on these old curvy roads around here, my friend in his camaro and my friend in his mustang can't even dream of keeping up!!! alot of fun is to be had in a stock MSP, especially at autox and stuff. Just MO

Oh I definately agree with that. I love the way the car handles. I just wish I could have been able to afford to buy a 1.8t GTI and still have a few grand to dump into that car. My buddy as an 01 with 70k miles on it and 50k of those miles has been on a big turbo. No problems or quirks whatsoever. He has been running over 300hp for a very long time now (recently he is up to at least 320hp) and his car is still reliable! I could only dream of doing that with my msp. Fortunately, the looks make up for it! I think my next car will have to be a turbo that can withstand higher boost though!

I sold my 2003 GTI 1.8T with Atp 93 oct chip and the eibach full suspension package to get my MSP and i couldn't be more glad. It was one of the most unrealible piece of junk I've ever owned.

Most of them are not, but you do get a few, just like any car, that end up being crapola. It is more rare though with most of the newer VWs. I just bought my MSP and I"ve already had to take it to the dealership for the suspension and I'm about to take it back due to the turbo leaking oil. Sometimes, ya just can't find the perfect car! When my factory warranty is up in 2k miles, I sure hope my MSP is nice to me otherwise I might be selling it despite the compliments I get and the fun it is to drive.
