On MTV, anyway. West Coast Customs and MTV have decided to file for divorce, amicably ending a relationship that debuted as “Pimp My Ride” with host Xzibit in 2004.
WCC boss Ryan Friedlinghause cites his company’s image as the reason behind the decision, and announced that he will be moving his operations to Corona, Calif., to new digs that will become the set of a new show WCC will do with the Discovery Channel and the producers of “American Chopper” and "American Hot Rod."
The reason WCC is bailing on MTV was no secret, particularly after the shop’s Sean Mahaney (or a very convincing impersonator) dropped in on a thread on the Beyond car forums (http://forums.beyond.ca/showthread/t-64102.html) to say, “Most of the MTV people are not real car guys... They pay us to build the cars, so we do what they want even if it sucks.”
WCC’s show on the Discovery Channel is as-of-yet unnamed, but it will likely extend outside merely the high-end automotive world to profile WCC’s work on private jets, helicopters and tour buses.

I only made it like 4 posts into that "beyond car forum" before I thought my brain was going to explode. Only good will come of this split. Seems that MTV ruins anything they get their hands on.

yeah, it is about damn time but I'd think the decision was based on a better offer (ie. $$$)

"Pimp my ride" was crap, crappy riced out P.O.S. It was by far the worst show about cars ever. I would much rather watch Overhauln' or Tuner Transformation or The Power Block. A lot of these shows are all the same Unique whips for example, I mean there not any different then the shop around here anyone can throw big wheels, new seats, some tv's...etc. onto a car, all I'm saying is that they need some more educational auto shows on where you can actually learn something. All these shows need to look at the Power Block on Speedtv it's not all cosmetic crap, they actually have usefull info on their shows.

I have seen some of the cars WCC builds for shows and the celebs. Thier work is by far some of the best customization I have seen. MtV has ruined alot of that rep with thier picks of cars, and what they had done.
IMHO, one of the best cars done on the show was the escort with the m3 conversion front end. Top nothc body work, and not too ricy interior.

Their work and creativity is top notch but they were throwing around to many brand names and ruining people's cars. Pimping someone's ride does not have to entail taking up all useable cargo space and replacing rear seats with fish tanks, huge subwoofers, and game systems. Most of the owners on the show didn't need their ride pimped...they just needed a tune-up, some body work, and a few OEM parts to get their cars back on the road.
It's actually disturbing to me. Most of the people prolly had to sell their cars because they would have been stolen right out of their front yard and stripped for parts. I'd rather see WCC pimp out celebrity rides. At least you know they can afford it and it will fit their lifestyle.

The show has its good points and bad points. Good point, seeing customs made from cars that are not normally customized. I actually like seeing what can be done with an old 80's minivan or buick. Good point, the WCC staff. Bad point, the goofy stunts. I'd rather see a car turned into a real street machine instead of trying to come up with a different stunt each time to top the last one. Bad point, cars that obviously are bought to see if you can get on the show. Some of those junkers aren't worth $200.00! Who believes this is actually the only car they can afford? If so, how will they ever insure the pimped ride? Bad point, not showing stuff. They never explain how the fix a tranny or get an old beater to run smoothly. In later shows, they didn't even bother showing a lot of the wheels or interior, focusing on the trick stunts while real tuner parts people might be interested in just magically appear on the car.

I'm really curious how long the kids that get the satellite tv or internet in their car have before they have to start paying the bills. That shit can't be cheap. Also, if you read the Beyond Forums, Sean said that the kid with the DJ equipment had all his stuff stolen.

i'm in the minority, but i really got a kick out of that show. escapist, mindless entertainment/silly and pointless but funny nonetheless.

pmr wasnt that bad all the time.. well yes 9/10's of the time it was rather horrid. but how ever. the green and white vw vane they did was really nice. And as i get a couple laughs out of the show i was watching it tonite after reading this. The episode where the Heather chick gets her 80's customdeluxe c10 redone was rather nice. until they did the bed full of electronics. everyhting else was awsome, i mean the paint was nice, the interior didnt have stupid shit. i mean hell they even had differnt brakes put on it. How come the show couldnt have been more like powerblock or a saturday afternoon spike show

I liked the show and thought that the guys were creative. I mean look at what the worked with, some real POS! Some of it was over the top, but it was TV. I think its a good move to get away from MTV.

I simply took the show for what it was, entertainment. Some ideas were good and some just downright horrific. I guess what really got to me about the show is that they spent X amount of crazy money on improving the "looks" of the car that nothing was ever done to the internals (engine, transmission, etc.) I always thought to myself that if they drove a POS in and simply applied makeup then it'll still be a POS when it leaves and maybe even die.
The worst of it are the huge chrome rims they put on the rides. Looks great until your rusted axle snaps or wheel bearings seize. Yea, real safe ride!
Anyone remember the lawsuit against them for putting the tv in the steeing wheel? Great idea MTV!
