I've been wanting to install this tacometer i purchased for my car latley, but I need to know two things, #1 How do you install a taco #2 At what RPM does the protege Dx redline at?... Input is apprieciated, because right now, I've been running my car pretty hard when racing and I'm not sure if I'm shifting where i should be, I take first gear to 30mph and it snags 2nd, then I take second to 50-53mph, and third to 75mph. I haven't hit the rev limiter yet so I know I'm not running it to hard, but I think a tacometer would be useful.

i wish i had a Tacometer. i get pretty hungry on long drives and it would help if i had something like that to locate food for me. sort of a mexican GPS.
ok, all kidding aside, there should be a wire for the tach coming off the ECU or the easiest way to get one in is to find a gauge cluster from a tach equipped protege and toss it in the dash.

wiring from before like 6/99 is VASTLY different from 7/99+...(not 100% on the month ,but I know during middle of 99 build)

Very, very true. Since my car was a 04/99 production I made very sure that when I was searching for a cluster with tach on car-part.com that the cluster that I bought was from before 6/99. Then I just pulled the old tachless cluster out and put the new cluster with tach in and everything worked. Besides my kms going up from 70,000 to 79,000.....no big deal though.

That was hilarious! Those 'Tacometers' would sure come in handy when you need that quick Mexican food fix.

You could fix the odometer problem if you want to. Just search the how-to forums for "Gauge disassembly".

nope. guages from tachless clusters and guages from clusters w/tach are NOT interchangeable

Really? I wasn't thinking about it but I guess your right since the layout is different and therefore the circuit board is different.

yep...will work between cluster with tach, like if you break needles, but us DXer's are SOL again

I wouldn't want to mess with that stuff even if it was possible. I got my cluster w/ tach now, and my Dave B rings. More than happy with that. Plus, it is super scary having everything apart and out in the open......breaking a needle would be brutal.

(hahaspit) rofl, tacometer. I can't stop laughing. I thought this thread was a joke.
It's spelled tachometer, tach for short. I hope you don't pronounce it like "taco" too. (boom01)

tach signal can be found on the purple/white wire off the diagnostic port...diagnostic port is on firewall, driver side in engine bay

Sorry about that dude. Either you can do what TampaSport20 said, or maybe you could pull out your cluster, and actually see if there is a purple/white wire connected to your cluster. That is what I did, and mine had the wire already in there except that I didn't have a tach. Hope that helps you out.

well i know 01-03 are different from the lower models in alot of ways, but by any chance if you dont have a cluster with a tach (and yes that is how i correctly spell it) and get one off another protege is there a plug that just sits there behind the cluster that can plug into a cluster with tach for the 01-03 proteges.
