Okay, I am seriously thinking of joining the 'Darkside' and turning my 1999 1.6L (Manual Tranny) into a turbocharged sleeper.

I'm still weighing in the options that I have, but wanted to get feed back from the 1.6L community on whether it's really worth turbocharging these engines. That is, does anyone have any REAL data in regards to Dyno sheets, 1/4 mile times, acceleration times, etc...

I already know that these engines are 'boost friendly' compared to a 2.0L engine, but can a boosted 1.6L take on a 2.0L Mazdaspeed?

I only know of two kits available for our cars, the Hi-Boost (which is $$$) or the Turbo Specialties. Does anyone have any reviews they can share? Are there other kits available? ( I don't believe Mental Addictions make one for 1.6L, correct? )

Hi-Boost-> http://www.hiboost.com/kit16.html

Turbo Specialties-> http://www.sfxperformance.com/parts/TUSMP2501E.htm

BTW, I will be using this for SOLO 1 and SOLO 2 race events, so I need something that can give me a competitive advantage with the least amount of $$$ spent. (Hmmm, I wonder if I advertise these 'Turbo Kit' companies on my car during races, if they will give me a break on the purchase price? )

Input would be appreciated.

A little late, but here you go...

Hiboost is really the only off-the-shelf kit available...but it is great !!!

And yes a turbo 1.6L will hand a MSP it's ass in a straight line race...the ZM has much shorter rods and can handle much more boost without having to "build" the engine..and there is like a 400lb weight advantage..In auto-x you better have the MSP suspension setup though, or the MSP will own you....

do a search on here for dynosheets and such...Juan has already posted it all

Juan, owner of Hi-Boost, hit like 295 to the wheels raising the boost to 22psi and on racing fuel (with stock internals). On a daily driver basis the consensus seems to be 10-12 psi max on stock internals. I have a wagner kit that will be getting the MPI piggyback soon with an extra set of injectors. At 10psi I'll be around 200whp, good enough for me. If I can do it all over again I'd go with Hi-Boost, no brainer. Only thing I'd do different is not go with the haltech as it pulls a cel and fails state inspection here in NC.

it just so happens MIA Protege is selling his kit, check out the for sale section.

I hate saying this but do a search, there is a guy selling his kit. Or thinking about it anyways.

that for sale thread is already closed, although I SERIOUSLY doubt MIA is trying to scam...stuff like this always comes up for sale when I dont have the loot

DAMMIT

biknmans first kit went up F/S before and the same thing happened to me...

ARGHHH

I'll just keep going with the s/c idea..peice by piece

Guys,

Thanks for your input. I really appreciate it.

Hmmm, I should contact MIA....

BTW, I do have Tokico HP, H&R Springs, AWR 21.5 Sway Bar, CP Racing Strut Tower Bar AND Lower Tie Bar.... So if I get a HiBoost Turbo Kit... I may be able to take on a MSP on the Solo1 Track.

we carry the hiboost kit; http://mazda3online.web.aplus.net/product_info.php?cPath=21_31_52&products_id=104

the TSI kit cannot compare in any sense to the quality and performance of the hiboost unit.
