car hesitates now so I go to Advance and get the cel checked:
P0507 - Idle Control System RPM High
P1170 - Manufacturer Control Fuel Air Metering
P0420 - Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank1)
Maybe one problem is causing all three codes, dunno. Anyone want to take a stab at it.

i had that same problem with my car when I first got it. So I pumped a load of injector cleaner and fuel sytem cleaner into it for like two weeks. Then I changed the spark plugs, wires and coil packs. Still nothing. Then it went on for like another two weeks and all of a sudden it just stopped one day. Hmm. I now realize telling you all of this was absolutely no help to you. *IDIOT!!!*

Dont you have a standalone ecu?
Did you always have cel or is it recent.

FMU at the moment, piggyback coming in march. never had a cel until 3 months ago when it started running lean.

Just keep throwing parts at it until you fix it. Or spend 75bux and get it properly diagnoised.

I threw in the towel. I'm just gonna wait and have MP Nick mess with it in March.

Did you dump some water on top of the intake manifold (intake manifold to head connection) while the engine is running?

nope

Go try it. Engine idling dump a bottle of water where the injectors are and listen for any slurping noises.

if it does slurp what would that mean ?

Your intake gasket is not sealing, causing idle problems and lean condition.

Checking the trusty protege online manual
http://protege5.ugly.net/01-02a.PDF
The only thing thats common between them is a vac leak, or a pcm malfunction (that would suck).

Primary O2 Sensor
YOU ARE MY FUCKING HERO!!!
had an old after cat sensor laying around so I figured why not. screwed it in, reset the ecu, BAM! back in business.
take note 1.6L people - the "universal" sensors auto stores carry that are listed for our cars do NOT fit. it would take some work (ie. drilling new threads) to make them work.

edit - bosch sensor does fit. my custom header was the issue

uummm... A secondary o2 isn't the same as a primary o2.

I know, but it fits and works for the moment. went to Autozone and got the universal Bosch O2 sensor. did all the wiring and turns out it doesn't fit the 1.6 liter. then went to Advance and they carried the exact same thing and I'm not ready to pay 300+ for an OEM sensor. I still need the right part but I'm happy the car runs way better and now know what's the problem.

if someone knows what pre-cat O2 sensor will work (other than a 300 dollar OEM) and where to find it let me know
thanx

You said you already replaced the primary 02... I am confused. Also the o2 wouldn't have anything to do with the idle codes. Did you dump the water to appease me?
Witchdoktor

hehe....didn't get to the water trick, did the O2 sensor swap first and that instantly had the car running right again. idiot me forgot it was the 2nd sensor, not the first. and why I didn't try to swap out the sensor before changing the fuel pump and fmu proves I'm just a bigger idiot (stoned)

he works at donald craig mazda is mooresville and can probably get you a good deal on a sensor... when i had the system idle to high, i had a dirty IAC and I took it out a cleaned it and that solved my problem.
