I purchased a "97 Mazda Protege SE" about 6 months ago.

The logo on the car is as follows:

This site however: http://www.mx-3.com/emblem/

..states that "In 1997, Mazda Redesigned The Symbol Once Again. The New Version Shows Off A "V" In The Centre Of An "M". According To Mazda, It Represents Creativity, Flexibility, And Vitality." which was changed to:

Is it possible that my 97 Protege SE is in fact not even a 97 model or were 97 models still being produced with this logo?

I can take pics of my car for further clarification if you would like.

i looked at the page an dit looks like 97 is the actual year of the change. not the car model year. if i am right your 97 would still ahve the older logo cause it was built in 96

Makes sense.

It could be a '95-'97 Protege, as Mazda used that emblem from '93-'97. The did change it LATE 1997 for the '98 models, thus '98 Proteges are easily distiguised by the grill, centercaps, and trunk lid emblems.
