View Full Version : Whine in neutral

I finally got my car back with a new LSD, but now I am hearing a light whine when the car is in neutral and the clutch is not pushed in. IT goes away when I push the clutch pedal in, though. This is a brand new ACT clutch set (throwout and pilot bearings included). Does anyone know if this is normal with the ACT clutch? I have had so many problems with my dealer's service department that it would really piss me off if I found out that they didn't put something back together right. I already had to tighten the 2 bolts that hold the slave cylinder since they didn't bother to do that. I REALLY don't want to have to take it back there since they have had it for almost a month and always seem to F something up.

knowing most dealers, they prob did screw something up. however, there are some places with reputable techs. take it back and tell them somethings wrong. if they refuse to fix talk to the regional rep.

Mine does the same thing, and I just got the Act clutch installed also. Mine was installed by a tranny shop though, not the dealer.

It doesn't seem to be doing it anymore (or at least not for a while). I'm hoping that it was just the pilot bearing breaking in or something. Either way it's going back to the dealer in the morning for a seperated CV joint that I found last night.

Yeah, that's how mine was. It would whine some while sitting there, then I would push the clutch lightly and let go and it would stop for a while.

Yeah, pretty much the same for me. I have only put on about 50-75 miles since the Act clutch and Quaife LSD install, so I don't know if it will go away. Guess we'll see.Yeah, that's how mine was. My car makes the same noise and I haven't had any tranny work done. The dealer diagnosed it as noisy pilot and release bearings (throwout bearing). They told me they compared my car to 3 others and they all make the same noise. They deducted that this was "normal operation". They said it had no effect on the premature wearing of clutch so I decided to live with it. It still bugs me though.
Interesting enough, someone else in the forum argued and the dealer changed the bearings. Apparently they still made that noise.

The part that worries me is that it is a brand new pilot bearing and a brand new throwout bearing. The only reason it would be screwed up is because of the way he Mazda tech put it together. I just hope that it's not something that will cause problems later on.

Good idea. Will do. I am going to mention it to the tech that will be working on my car tomorrow.

It's the throwout bearing for sure. It will either make a rattling noise, or a whiney noise for awhile when it is first installed. Don't worry about it too much if the noise is the only issue.

So are you saying that the throwout bearing will make a rattling noise or whiney noise for a while after its first installed, then it will be normal a.k.a. quiet again?
BTW mine was quiet for 400 miles after the clutch install, now it started making noises. (screwy)
Please verify :)

this thread is a testiment of how shitty the included bearings in aftermarket clutch kits are.... this shit happens time and time again... I can't stress enough that people should use at least the OEM bearing which is high quality!
the only exception I know of is the exedy clutch, the included bearing is the exact same as the OEM shit

agree 100%. I dropped the tranny to take out the ACT throw out bearing and put the factory one back in.

My stock bearing had more play than I'd like. The whine is slowly getting shorter and shorter. Now it only lasts for about 1 sec. on a cold start. Sometimes not at all.

They all have a ton of play. I've never seen one that didn't look and feel like it was about to fall apart in my hands.

I'm glad you said that...Just putting a new motor in my car and while the motor was still out, we checked the throwout bearing...It seamed well intact, but VERY sloppy, I was worried I was going to have to put in a new one of those too
Thanks for the info

Weird. Maybe that's why my ACT was whiney at first. It didn't seem to have much play at all. Maybe it just needed to be broken in. I only have about 350 miles on it.

Yeah, I think mine is about done whining. I have close to 400 miles on the new clutch and it barely does it anymore. I have a feeling that another 100 miles and it won't make a peep.

Hopefully it doesn't whine either.

Mine kinda has a chirping/whistling sound and when i press the clutch in a bit it goes away... i wonder if this has to do with the throwout bearing as well. The clutch feels fine and everything else is good... hm weird. Doesnt do it all the time either. Hopefully its "normal" or it will go away soon. Its reasurring to hear others on here have it and nothings gone wrong.
