Just curious as to what kind of tires (the brand, not size) come stock on the 2003 Protege 5. I've searched quite a bit to find different people saying different things. The ones on mine are Kumho Ecsta Asx's, 195/60R15 I believe.

The stock P5 wheels are 16", and have 195/50R16 IIRC
They came stock with Dunlop SP5000 tires.

How do you think the tires that came with mine are then? I do believe that they are 195/50R/16.

anything is better than the garbage that came stock. i think the asx's are pretty good tires for all seasons.

If you live in an area that doesn't get much snow then the Kumhos are ok tires. If you are prone to a lot of snowfall I wouldn't use them.
Still, as others have said, ANYthing's better then the stock Dunlops, although we're getting to the point where there shouldn't be too many more of them around.

Well I live up in NY and we've got a lot of snow already. So far the've driven quite well. I just have to drive a little more careful than normal :)
I'm in WI with plenty of snow. I use the Ecsta ASX in the summer, and have a set of Dunlop Graspic DS-2 tires mounted on a spare set of rims for the winter. Snow tires make oh so much difference in this climate.

Agreed, I'm using the Graspics on steelies.

Yeah i use my stocks for winter and they suck in the snow. I spin the tires through 3rd gear. That's pretty pathetic in a car with only 130hp. Of course it's probably a lot better than trying to drive on my Parada spec2's in the snow. That would probably get pretty scary.

I tried like hell to get my snow tires on before the 1st snow, but my wheels were stuck (long story) and I had to drive my Yoko AVS's in about an inch of the stuff.
The only thing scarier was the first time I drove in a hard rain with the stock tires.
There was really no point in having a steering wheel because it didn't work.

Agreed, I'm using stock tires (with 30k worth of wear on them) and they simply do NOT work in snow, especially when around here I have to do a lot of uphill starts. Hell, nearly flat starts spin the tires sometimes when I'm doing it in second. But it's vancouver, the home of the tropical christmas, and there's no snow in sight for a long time on the horizon.

After the original Dunlops wore out (finally!) I went with a set of Fuzion ZRI's (205/15/16) So far, they've been great in the rain we've been having! Would not want to try them in snow, they're not even rated for that; but where I am that is not an issue....

i just can't imagine how bad the preformance of the stock Dunlops in snow..its bad enough when it rains. i just can't wait to get rid of those Dunflops.

I had stock Dunflops on mine right now.. in about 4 or 6 inches of snow outside now.. not really any problems getting around. :D

yeah i have the fuzion zri's.. they're good i guess. haven't really drove in the rain though. =P
There's a lot of hating on those Dunlops. You guys have to remember, those are OEM tires on an ECONOMY car.
I've got nearly 60k miles on mine, with multiple autocrosses and one track day; where they never got greasy until the final (of four) twnety minute sessions.
Yeah, they don't handle like Azenis but they've given me pretty good bang for the buck.

dunlops are ok in snow if you know how to use them and want the experience of driving an 80's SUV but without the rust.
I could've sworn I read something about the sidewalls on Kuhmo's being very weak and prone to blowing out (shrug).
the sidewalls of the kumhos are on the thin side, but as long as you keep the pressure good and don't run them into a curb (learn to park damnit!) they are fine
I've only had my kumhos for a season, but I'm liking the performance/dollar ratio on them.

The tread design on the Fuzion ZRI's is based on Champ car/IRL rain tires. After 25k the stock Dunlops lost almost all wet weather adhesion, so I was looking for something that would hold better when the weather is wet (Oct-April in No. CA). So far, no probs with the ZRI's.....

The stock Dunlops actually had pretty decent dry grip from what I could tell. After about 10k miles, though, the wet traction was just awful.
I managed to get about 27k miles on them before giving up and getting new tires because I knew I'd be in a world of hurt to use the Dunlops over another winter.
I ended up getting the Kumho ASXs because they were much more reasonably priced than the Pirellis that I really wanted.
In my opinion, the Kumhos definitely have a much softer sidewall than the Dunlops, slightly less dry grip, but vastly improved wet traction. They still aren't super great for the Wisconsin winters, but I make do with them (until the day I can afford a set of steelies with winter tires).
Overall, I'd say the Kumhos were a good buy.
