MagStar 8.5mm double silicone MAGTAR Wires (red, yellow, blue), where to buy? Advance Auto Parts
Warning!!! Wires itself works pretty fine (confirmed by mazda techinician), however, bottom of the plugs wires(boot) gets easily seperated and you may need to use some tools to get it out from plug holes.. I used hanger and it was pain in the axx. So either stick with stock ones from www.protegegarage.com (http://www.protegegarage.com).

MAGNECOR 8.5mm Ignition Wires (red), where to buy? CorkSport
http://corksport.com/store/category/4qbu.21/99p-engine.html $74.00 + shipping

Nology Hotwires (lots of colors to choose from), where to buy? www.protegegarage.com (http://www.protegegarage.com)Coil Pack replacement-
If you have misfiring problem, even though you have replaced plugs and wires then check your coil packs.
I have searched and called every local stores near by me (Advanced auto parts (None), Autozone (back order), Napa (None), Car Quest (None), Oreilly (None), no one actually have them, except for mazda dealer.
Airtex (5C1208) or Standard Motor Products (UF-407)
OEM Coil Pack Choice 1 - Coil pack Boot (KJR118T08), One Coil Pack(ST8518100C) call your local stealerships for pricing
you can get them same day or next day. However, I was quoted about $130~180 for one coil pack from several dealerships. , unless you are really good friends with parts dept.
OEM Coil Pack Choice 2 - If you need OEM but need it for good price and fast? www.protegegarage.com (http://www.protegegarage.com)Oxygen Sensor Replacement -
don't need to change them unless you have problem with sensor
You can either get universal type and splice the wires (about $30~50cheaper) or get OEM type for direct replacement
Where to buy? you can try your local storesEGR Valve Cleaning or Replacement -
A lot of people have complained about the eratic idle the Protege sometimes gets when the clutch is pushed in and rpms are allowed to fall quickly. The idle will jump anywhere from around 200-1100. This problem seems to get worse when the car warms up. Either you can clean your EGR by yourself or replace the whole thing.
Or if you think your problem is not related to EGR then go to your local dealer and ask them to resetup your rpm to factory setting.
How to for EGR Removal and Cleaning, Rough Idle fix http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=94788
EGR Valve Replacement [1], Contact Ken at Protegegarage for pricing, cheaper than most of your local dealers.
EGR Valve Replacement [2], Airtex #4F1432Motor Oil Change - (YMMV)
I use Mobil1 Full Synthetic Blend 5W-30. they are about $4.99 from auto parts store or walmart. I use 4 bottles. However, I don't have garage to change it myself, so I usually take them to local shop and get discounts.
Also, you can buy oil filter from any store and get additional discounts
K&N High Performance Oil Filter, HP1008, where to buy? www.protegegarage.com (http://www.protegegarage.com) $11.99
Carx - oil change service $14.99 + your oil + disposal fee + tax, the total usually comes out $18
Firestone - it's about same price as Carx, but I don't trust them, one time they swapped my mobile1 to their oils.
JiffyLube - Full Sigunature Service $29.99 but if you have coupon, it's about $19.99 -$4.00 (if you bring your own motor oils), but they check everything besides just doing oil change, like cleaning your windshield lol, there was news about jiffylube scam, so be sure to check if they actually doing their work.
Midas (maintenance package, oil change + tire rotatioin) - $34.99 - $10(if you bring your own motor oil) = $24.99 YMMVFuel Filter Replacement -
**the protege does not have a serviceable fuel filter, it only has the in tank fuel sock. I'm replacing one of my coil pack tomorrow, so I will take pics and post them here tomorrow. :)

Two things to look out for:

1. When you pull up the coil pack do so slowly. If the boot is split it may come all the way up to the top of the hole where you can grab it with some needle nose pliers before it falls off and back down the hole. If the boot isn't broken it still helps to get a finger on it so that it doesn't pop off - it's a pretty tight fit. But don't use the needle nose pliers if the boot is ok, because it won't be afterwards. I know you think the coil pack is bad but it may still turn out to be something else, so try to preserve the coil if you can. If all that fails and the boot goes down the hole (or stays down there) break out a wire coat hanger and a vacuum cleaner and follow the instructions here:

http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123616443&highlight=harpoon

2. Don't tighten down the two bolts that hold the pack too much. They are only spec'd for a few lbs-feet of torque, in fact the manual gives the torque in lbs-inches. One of the bolts on my car made a nasty noise as if it was stripping, but it's still in there tight when I shake it by hand, so I have not dealt with it yet.

If the boot isn't broken swapping the coil takes less than 5 minutes.

They fail quickly as I hear, but I have always used NGK without any problems at all. Seems anytime I have bought a car that had bosch plugs I replaced them shortly after buying the car, but that is usually because I like to know how many miles it has been since the last tuneup so I give it a full tune up shortly after purchase.

Just a FYI. I never could find that link to the 30k or 60k package on protegegarage, so I emailed Ken.

This is what he said.

"i actually never had it listed though i really should!

here is what the kit consists of - waterpump, timing belt, oil filter, plugs and trans fluid (let me know which kind of trans you have). the coil packs are out of stock for the time being and not orderable from mazda. wires are $90 for a pair."

He didn't list the prices though, which is kind of weird.

Diehonda
02-14-2007, 12:32 PM
Yeah but Ken is on it and if you really wanted to order it he could get you prices. I sent him an email about the ignition coils and he was quick to reply and very courteous.

Yes they are on back order nationally but if you call enough delearships you may find one or two.

I ended up getting a 1.8 ignition coil and wires and was able to minimize the amount of downtime.

On a side note. I have had platinum Autolite plugs in for 30K and they still look new. Not bad for settling for whatever was in stock at the time at Autozone.

Bijou, for the timing belt replacement you should also mention that the tensioner and idler should be replaced, as well as the water pump if you're near 100k miles.

Also replacing the cam seals isn't exactly standard when doing the timing belt, because it would require taking the cam gears off, and then you'd have to make sure the cams are still properly aligned with eachother (they won't be) when you get the gears back on. The crank seal is a good one to replace with the timing belt though.

Protegegarage.com carries a "timing belt kit" that uses all Dayco parts (not OEM but they seem fine?).. belt, tensioner, idler for 125ish I think. So then the only things you would need would be the OEM tensioner spring and the crank oil seal, both of which Ken could order for you. I don't know if he can source this or not but if you are doing the timing belt install yourself, you can save a lot of headache and buy a tool that jams between the two cam gears to hold them in position when you remove the belt.

A good writeup, I had always seen it stickied but never looked at it!

Autolite are ok, but not great. I ran some for about six months until I got some NGK V Powers. The autolite seem to be alright but I found less hesitation with the NGK's.

Alright, I am just going to install them until I can get NGK, then I am going to switch. Or just take them back, but thanks!

Well I took back the Autolites because I don't know why and ended up getting Denso Double platinum. Does anybody know if they are good or horrible. Nobody has NGK V Power here :( Autozone or advanced. So I am just going to wait and order it from Online. But my car threw the cel for misfiring today so I really need to change my plugs tomorrow, already cleaned the Injectors today! 51k miles on stock plugs and they are bad now :(

I know you probably ordered it, but if not try to contact protegegarage for parts and they should have them and they have really good competitive price.

In the tune-up vein, silly question: How do you advance/retard ignition timing (if you can)? I see the scale by the pulley, I've got my inductive light, I know you need hot idle and jumper the test connector - which junction points?, is spec like 9 degrees before TDC?, but as for a distributor...how do they do it now?

I just bought a 2003 Mazda Protege 5 with 89,000 miles.

Took it to a mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection....and he said the only thing it really needed was an air filter.

But I don't know much about cars and I don't know how thorough his check was....

What maintenance typically needs to be done at 90-100k?

Welcome! (hi)

If I were in your shoes I would budget in the basics...Oil change, replace belts, new spark plugs + wires, air + fuel filter change, tranny fluid change as well as an alignment check and make sure your tires are properly inflated (according to manufacturer specs).

Also check how much life you have left on the tires, brake pads and shocks.

I'm sure there are other things to check/replace if anyone wants to chime in on that...Good luck, enjoy the forums and be sure to post some (pics)

when I bought my p5-2002/110K miles, this is what I did changed:
coolant
transmission
brake fluid
engine oil
New plugs

I did not need to change air filter, it was good

My advice, make a copy of this and put in you're glove box, you'll need it frequently, also don't carry two dongles in your pocket at the same time, they seem to wipe each other out (especially when you have two protege's lol)

I have hit 110k miles on my 2002 P5. I am planning on taking my car into get a tune up. What should I expect to be performed? They change spark plugs and the spark plug wires? Is that it? Is that what a "tune up" for this car is? (Note, I have already done my timing belt, water pump, flushed engine coolant, replaced radiator hoses.) I'm specifically interested in what a "tune up" consists of.

Diehonda

If you have already changed that much then your tune up will consist of spark plus, oil, filter, inspect suspension, bushings, top off fluids, and probably a couple other things.

Really, just get some spark plugs, change your oil and filter, check your suspension bushings (i.e. sway bar bushings, tie rod ends, etc), top off your fluids if needed, and grease your guides where your doors open. No point in paying the dealer to do this unless you don't have the time or a spark plug socket.

I usually grease the guides, WD40 the latches, and spray some graphite in the locks every fall.

What transmission do you have?

DawsonPro5

Automatic Transmission. To the best of my knowledge, the Trans has never been flushed/refilled. Yeah, I do need to get the suspension inspected...I have a "knocking/bumping" noise coming from my front driver side when I go over bumpy roads. Bah! Lord knows how much that's gonna cost me.

What do you guys recommend for oil? I've heard of people using both 5W-30 and 10W-30.

5W-30 is what I have used in both my P5's. Then again, I contend with colder winter temps. Since you are in Tx (guessing anyway), the 10w-30 might be a better fit. You can post in the Texas forum to get some better local advice!

Jiffylube sucks. They just use some cheap filters or crap from Mexico. I went there for oil change once. The oil filter was broken and caused oil leak from the engine. Suck ass big time!

Just read the manual today. Almost no difference between the two (5-30 and 10-30) just 5-30 goes down to -20F or more whereas 10-30 only good till -10F'ish. These are the only two noted in the owners manual. I would definitely recommend an oil that has smaller gap between hot and cold viscosity. Read it somewhere in a tuning book. I would run straight 30 if it was warm enough all the time but thats not Idaho. Changing my oil today using 5-30 and add some Lucas oil stabilizer to try softening the rod knock at start up.

Hey everyone,

First time poster here. Just wanted to get some feedback (for ammo) before I go to the garage. I am pretty uninformed under the hood.

This doesn't happen all the time but recently, and now more frequently my P5 is stalling out when I come to a stop. Idles and revs to about 2-3k rpm at a when trying to restart after a stall out doesn't turn over right a away. Check engine light came on the other day as well.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
NickoBeh

First thing you should do is find out what the cel code is. Go up to autozone or whatever your local auto part store is and have them read it. My guess is a failing 02 sensor

Lol just was quoted $900 from my local mechanic for a timing belt change, this included water pump replacement and valve cover gasket replacement. Thought it was a bit spendy but including the water pump cost/labor is probably another $300 to the bill. Good diea to replace the pump at that time or not? I haven't heard much about protege water pumps. Are they prone to failure?

Old post but my .02 cents would be an EGR valve.

Just dug up an old email with the part numbers for the larger oil filters I use, if someone could add this to the sticky I think it would be helpful. Usually I can get a package deal on synthetic oil and a purolator pure one filter (sometimes they package the lower end purolator filter in but the lady at the counter let me return it for the cost off the "pure one" filter last time)

this is the normal recommended one for the P5 (prolly the same for all proteges?)
PL14612 - http://www.purolatorautofilters.net/resources/Popup/Pages/PartDetailPopup.aspx?partnum=PL14612

this one has the same thread size and fits on our car but is a deeper filter with more filter media, meaning you can run your oil for just as long or longer while retaining proper filtration
PL14610 - http://www.purolatorautofilters.net/resources/Popup/Pages/PartDetailPopup.aspx?partnum=PL14610

so yeah, same thread, valve psi, OD, etc but taller so there is more filter media inside. You can usually get them at the auto parts store for like $6.50 sometimes online for like a 3 or 6 pack at like $15~30.
