well recently i started getting a rough idle. i don't know why or how it started. i looked into the EGR valve removal and cleaning but i don't think that could be it. it's the first time i've had this problem. i didn't really notice it until i put it into neutral and started to feel the car shake and feel like it wasn't getting any gas. it just started this week i believe, maybe a day or two ago. could it be i don't let my car warm up enough or something with the oil? i'm going to drive it around in alil to narrow it down on those. any input would be great. thanks.

edit: my friend said the other day when i pulled out of my parking lot he said i was burning quite a bit of oil. so i checked it the other day and it did drop alil. so i'm going to go check that.

mazdas tend to burn more oil compared to other cars. not sure on the rough idle, cover the basics....spark and gas.

coil might be on the way out.

Why don't you think it could be the egr? Sounds the most likely explanation to me.
If you get a CEL shortly, it is highly likely to be the egr.

That's only for the '03 I thought. Do the '02 P5's have this problem as well?

give the egr valve a good cleaning. sure it will solve the problem!

Faaantastic. So I have 60K miles on my P5 and I'm not the original owner. How would I get something like this fixed? Am I in the clear for having a problem? This worries me due to all the problems everyone else is having.

ok, i let the car warm fully up. drove fine. washed the car in and out while waiting for the car to cool. drove it alil more and at high rpms then suddenly neautral, and the rough idle was gone...i added more oil once the car cooled and topped off the coolant fluid. runs fine now...don't know what happened. maybe it just needed attention. there weren't any misfires so i don't think it could be the coil. mine is a 02 and i bought it from a dealer with 54k miles on it so i think they took care of it and cleaned the engine. the EGR valve...ehhh, i don't think so. i hate that valve since it's a PITA to connect to my headers (obx). it's sitting on that fine. i think it just needs more warmup time. but it should be good to go now. i'll post again if it starts to act up again. thanks for input. but i will double check the EGR and read up on the coil pack. i'm in the process of making a grounding kit so we'll see how that goes, as in helping out the rough idle that was once here.

Mine was acting up a few months ago. I had the rough idle in lower gears, but it seemed fine once it warmed up. Turned out my first o2 sensor was bad.
