How many miles does everyone have on their P5? (any engine problems, if so what and at how many miles did the problem occur)

I have 27715 on my 02, haven't had any problems (knock on wood)

91K miles the car. Motor had to be replaced at 30K due to rod knock. VICS screws came loose, always had the clutch chatter.

Other than that it's been OK. Motor wise at least.

2002 P5 "manutronic" :-)
23,000 miles (ish). Got it 18 months ago with only 8K on it.
EGR valve stuck around 18K. Dunlops dead after 20K (thank God)

No problems, just niggles - crap air con and heater, a few creaks and rattles, annoying whistling wind noise at anything above 50mph, mediocre all-round visibility.

Plusses far outweigh the negatives so far, though. The missus is always saying how much she loves it - I just don't get to drive it enough!

almost 59k here, no real issues. I'm replacing the timing belt tomorrow if I have time to, but the car hasn't had any issues at all other than things caused by me.

Right now it'll stall if I bring it up to 4000+ RPM and disengage the clutch, but that was because I figured I should do the EGR valve clean even though my idle was smooth, and now it idles low (500rpms) and shakes. I guess while I'm doing the timing belt I can pull off the intake and redo the EGR cleaning.

52k and still goin mighty strong! had a random rattle a few months ago, but it was just a messed up sensor apparently. dealership replaced it and all was well. rust on the other hand...small amounts of bubbling across the car. rear upper wheel wells, rear hatch in the hole at bottom center, and the hood prop hole, too. nothing serious, though. i'm beginning to wonder if the alternator is ready to go, though. things are starting to really dim when i put down a window or turn up my heat.

62,000 miles. I'm on my second engine, and working on getting the second trans. Had the primary cat go bad at about 35k miles. Oil filter mechanism failed causing the flow of oil to slow down, leading to crank bearing failure. Gas mileage isn't as good as it was. I need to do the egr clean too. Time for the new timing belt and all that fun stuff also. My third gear syncro started going out at about 20K. Mazda would not warranty it (I know you are shocked right?) Car is running smooth though. I still love it. Oh yeah, my struts are starting to creak when I go over speed bumps. That's all I can think of for now.

I have around 72,000 on my 2002 P5. I bought it April 2002, I would have more miles on it but the only real time in the shop was because of being rear-ended twice in 2 years.

Right now I'm getting a really loud squeal more like a loud segwaking(sp?) noise. I have had the belts replaced, twice this year. Tomorrow I'm going to bite the bullet and go to a STEALERSHIP and have them look at it. When the SERPENTINE belt was replaced at STS they mentioned that the TIMING BELT would need to be replaced soon. (That was about 15,000 miles ago.)

Other than this problem I have no problems with the engine or performance of the car. I do drive a ton around 60 miles a day from home to work to my gym. I have also driven it to COOPERSTOWN, NY from Long Island twice and once to HERSHEY, PA down to GETTYSBURG, PA, back to Hershey, PA and back to LONG ISLAND...

I get the same exact gas mileage every week around 24 mpg combined, lower than what it sticker promised but hey what can anyone expect.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oh I need to get a STEALERSHIP story off my chest.. Smithtown MAZDA failed my inspection, get this because my rims had some curb damage and the tires needed to be replaced, they wanted to charge me $1500 bucks for 2 back tires and rims(the original Mazda boring rims), installed with valve stems as the girl told me.

I really came close to telling her that $1500 better come with a sexual favor.. I left the stealership went down the STS got 4 chrome 5 spoke rims, and 4 TOYO tires, installed, balanced and aligned for $1500 including tax...

That is why tomorrow I'm going to try Huntington Mazda, maybe I won't be treated like a smuck as bad...

Great site by the way :)

Wow misbehave that is some ugly damage.

I got luck in my 2 accidents, one was a huge milk truck taping my rear bumper at like 1 mile per hour and he broke my taillight and crunched the rear quarter panel about an inch, still cost almost $3000 to fix...

The other accident I stopped at a red light, I get slammed into my back bumper, the force pushed down the back bumper and the energy went through the car dislodging my drivers seat and went all the way to the master cylinder and cracked it sending brake fluid all over the road. :(

That cost about $3000 to fix also..

Mine caused about 9K to fix.
I was a a complete stop cause of traffic on I-5.
The jerk behind me wanted to stop someone from cutting into the lane in front of him and behind me after he saw the traffic ahead of me started to move. He gunned it and before I can even lift my foot of the brake. Then I heard 3 sec of tires squeeking and then Bam!!!
And guess what, the guy he tried to block from merging ended up pulling over with us after the crash and stayed as withness and told the cop everything.

It's really not that bad, a lot of cars are worse. We have a noninterference engine so if you mess up the timing when replacing the belt, it won't break anything it'll just run like crap. The only bitch about it is that you have to remove the #3 (I think that's the number) engine mount to remove/replace the timing belt. When I was installing my intake cam I managed to do it without removing that mount but I'm at a little over 60k miles now so I need to go in there and replace the belt.

The only word of caution I have is be careful with the timing belt tensioner, you will stretch out the spring if you pull on it too much. Right now my car is running with a spring from an assorted spring pack from Lowes. I have the replacement spring and timing belt and valve cover gasket (should be replaced when doing the timing belt since you have to take that off anyway) but I just haven't had time with school.

I don't know if there is a timing belt how-to but there is a cam how-to and it goes through all the steps you need to get the timing belt off, the only difference is that you don't need to take the cam gears off to slide the belt off.

You need an impact wrench for the job too to get the bolt off the crank pulley.

02MazPro5
01-15-2006, 12:24 PM
You dont need an impact to get the crank bolt off. I know tricks LOL... I've heard they are non interferance and they are interferance engines.... I'm going to go with the safer route and say they are.... It's so hard to say they are or arent unless you know for sure.

But thanks for the info.

98,110 miles on it.

installed spool stage 2 turbo at 91,000 miles

Will be having the timing belt done at 105,000 miles. Only mechanical problems I have is the drivers side door lock is broke. Got it used from Roni just waiting for it in the mail. When I do the timing belt I will be replaceing all belts and the water pump. That's is what I had to do when I had my dodge neon 3 years ago. The p5 is awesome by far the best car I have ever had. In my opinion the engine is a little noisy and not so bulletproff when turboing but it takes me to work and my girls to school. I can say this, when I don't drive it I miss driving it.

I just passed 48,000, bye bye warranty...

the only problem I had is the VTCS delay valve started sticking (fixed under warranty), and tickets for improper lights, exhaust, tint, lack of front license plate, ect. ect...

91K miles the car. Motor had to be replaced at 30K due to rod knock. VICS screws came loose, always had the clutch chatter.

Other than that it's been OK. Motor wise at least.

That was 12/16/05

Have 95K on it now, nothing new wrong with it...
