There is a loud screeching noise like a loose belt, but I just replaced the belts and they are pretty tight. Plus it only happens when it is cold outside, not just when the engine is cold. IT also only happens before 3000 rpms, at 3000 it just stops. It only happens in first gear when the car is accelerating. I cant figure it out, anyone have any idea what it is? A bearing maybe, a cat caught in the belts??? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

You sure its coming from the engine bay?
Put your car in Drive. Put on the parking break so the car doesn't roll away. have a listen under the hood.
If I'm not mistaken, I'm pretty sure its a belt. Could be that the belt isn't properly lubricated?
Then again, I could be talking shit as I truely, don't have a clue.. but based on some experience with screeching noises from engines, it usually turns out to be a belt of some kind.

I just did brand new belts and they are pretty tight. I did not use any type of belt dressing, but any other car I have done belts on didnt get dressing either and they never squealed. Its my girlfriends car, I told her just to take it back to MAzda to check it out.

Its not a common problem. Im gonna go with the cat stuck in the belt ;)
Def take that to mazda.
Belts don't need to be "luburicated" I would make sure the belts aren't too tight. U want a little play in them. If they are way too tight they may make noise and eventually break. This may be pointless, but I personally would also check my powersteering fluid. Make sure it isn't empty or low. These are just afew things I would check, But first and foremost make sure the belts aren't too tight.
Also, maybe loosen the belts or probably take them off, and make sure that none of the pulleys are loose (wobbly). Probably not the case but can't hurt to check.

I am thinking one of the idler pulleys bearings are toast, but I am not a Front Wheel Drive mechanic. I am 6'4" and I cant get my big fat hands in those tight spaces to just replace them. DOnt get me wrong though, I love her 03 ES, with a header, cat back, and intake it is really quick and nimble. I do hate how she can drive lead-footed and still get about 27-28 mixed driving, I only get 20 in my ranger.

I am having the same, or a very similar problem, in my car, and was wondering if you could share some wisdom. I thought it was the "top" pulley, so I sprayed some WD at the bearing and the noise went away immediately. Unfortunately, the noise came back after about a week, and now that little trick seems to have made it worse! Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks, Tim.

I had he same problem and a friend came over and said my new belts were to tight, so he loosened them and it went away after about a week. I guess they were a little streched from being to tight...
