Hi, I have a 1993 Mazda Protege LX and I want to drop an intake into it. I know that it is 1.8L, now will an intake for the mx3 or ford escort be compatible? There aren't that many choices for the 1st gen proteges so I wanted to check elsewhere. Thanks for everyone's input. (eekfu)

no. mine is custom. there is a weappon-r short ram on nopi, and some ebay ones, but they have a 90 degree bend @ the tb

i was looking at ebay and found this similar to our 1.8L SOHC engines.. i'm just wondering if it comes with the 90 degree elbow?!? i tried searching at our sister site www.clubprotege.com and most of them are running custom intake kits. I haven't found any compatible intakes other than the ZX3 struts. Here's a link of the auction I was thinking of getting.

ooo you have the b8, not the bp. your gonna have to go custom on that i think. and struts != intake ;)

He has an LX, he has a BP. That's what LX means.
Anyway, intake wise, I used the stock tube from the throttle body, cut a bit off at the end, put the H-box(the resonator thing) on, then an RX-7 airflow meter with a cone filter. Works great and lots of power.
You'll need to find a '86-'88 RX-7 for the AFM, it's been dynoed to produce(or release) ~8 WHP alone after it is tuned properly(not hard and I can lead you through it).

I took the CA in his location to mean California.
Plus the B8 and BP intakes are virtually the same and can be swapped.

i saw your thread and dyno with your rx-7 mod and that's impressive. Yes I do live in CA and i was worried about emissions here. That's why I'd rather lean towards staying stock with a cone filter at the end.
So, for the swap it would be the stock intake tube -> square black resonator -> rx-7 AFM -> intake adapter -> cone filter
I have that setup already just without the RX-7 MAF. I should try this mod out. Oh and BTW, my engine isn't exactly like the picture above. I believe it's the BP exactly the one in this thread minus the mods.

Here's what mine looks like, except I removed the pipe going off the AFM and just put the cone there as I feel it breaths a little better than the filter being smashed into the small space there, though the air is warmer. As you can see, I cut a full space(from hump to hump) off of the end of the stock intake tube. Forced the H-box on there(but it fits), then you will need a coupler for the h-box to AFM connection. It's odd, as the H-box is meant to clamp over something, not under, but if you push the coupler over the end all the way to the side of the box, then clamp it there, it works.

You can also just ditch the H-box but reports say that you'll lose some low end power and torque, plus you need a source of metered air for the vaccuum line that runs to it. Can't just plug it, I tried that, the car barely ran at start up(multiple dies and when it finally would run you have to keep your foot on the gas to keep it running, makes funny sounds too).
